It was founded as a Corinthian colony in the 7th century BC and was situated about 7 miles from the Ambracian Gulf, on a bend of the navigable river Arachthos ( or Aratthus ), in the midst of a fertile wooded plain.

Since 2002, Actium is linked with Preveza on the north shore of the Ambracian Gulf by the Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel, or Aktio-Preveza Immersed Tunnel ( traffic labels ).

Preveza () is a town in the region of Epirus, northwestern Greece, located at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf.

The Ambracian Gulf near Berenikea was the site of the naval Battle of Actium, on 2 September 31 BC, in which Octavian's ( later Augustus ) forces defeated those of Mark Antony and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt.

Over the next two days, 13 – 14 October 1798, a major massacre of the French troops and the local Greek population which defended the city took place in Preveza and the Port Salaora on the Ambracian Gulf, starting before Ali Pasha entered Preveza on 13 October but continuing also in his presence.

The Aktio-Preveza Immersed Tunnel, opened on 2002, is an important work of infrastructure for what has traditionally been a remote and underdeveloped region, and links Preveza to Actium (, Aktio ) on the southern shore of the Ambracian Gulf, greatly shortening the distance of the trip to Lefkada.

This section of motorway is expected to serve the popular tourist region around the Ambracian Gulf.

In the aftermath of the battle of Actium in the Ambracian Gulf in 31 BC, Octavian himself founded Nicopolis, the city of victory, in 28 BC, symbolically representing his successful unification of the Roman Empire under one administration and, geographically, a major transportation and communications point linking the eastern and western halves of the Mediterranean.

It passes on the east side of the Ambracian Gulf.

These territories extended from Axios river ( Αξιός ) to Ambracian Gulf ( Αμβρακικός ) and up to the Corinthian gulf ( Κορινθιακός ).

The region of Chameria overlaps to a high degree with the ancient and modern region of Thesprotia and the medieval region known as Vagenetia, lying north of Ambracian Gulf and west of the Pindus mountains.

The warm waters of the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift Current, which warm Norway and Sweden, also warm Finland.

The construction of the Baghdad Railway, financed by German banks, was designed to eventually connect Germany with the Turkish Empire and the Persian Gulf, but it also collided with British and Russian geopolitical interests.

The Iran – Iraq War ( also known as the First Persian Gulf War ) was an armed conflict between Iraq and Iran lasting from September 1980 to August 1988, making it the longest conventional war of the 20th century.
