Plato's Apology may be read as both a religious and literary apology ; however, more specifically literary examples may be found in the prefaces and dedications, which proceed many Early Modern plays, novels, and poems.

The source of its translation of The Apology of the Augsburg Confession is not the official 1584 Latin Book of Concord text, which had been the basis of the 1959 " Tappert Edition " English translation of the Apology later " octavo edition " text of 1531 rather than the earlier " quarto edition " text of 1531 is utilized ; however, the variant readings of the quarto edition appear in italics.

There is, however, no real way of knowing how closely Socrates ' words in the Apology match those of Socrates at the actual trial, even if it was Plato's intention to be accurate in this respect.

This has led some scholars to suspect that Xenophon's Apology was the original conclusion to the Memorabilia ; given our limited evidence, however, this cannot be known with certainty.

One contemporary criticism of Plato's Apology is perhaps implied by the opening paragraphs of Xenophon's Apology, assuming that the former antedated the latter ; Xenophon remarks that previous writers had failed to make clear the reason for Socrates ' boastful talk ( megalēgoria ) in the face of the death penalty.

Sir Anthony Shirley ( or Sherley ) ( 1565 – 1635 ) was an English traveller, whose imprisonment in 1603 by King James I caused the British House of Commons to assert one of its privileges — freedom of its members from arrest — in a document known as The Form of Apology and Satisfaction.

Living under house arrest following his declaration of insanity, Chaadayev next work was entitled, fittingly, " Apologie d ' un Fou " has been translated as " Apology of a Madman " but may better be translated as " Apologia of a Madman " ( 1837 ).

James Johnson argued that A Modest Proposal was largely influenced and inspired by Tertullian ’ s Apology: a satirical attack against early Roman persecution of Christianity.

This was the start of a " golden decade " of peace and prosperity, during which time Athanasius assembled several documents relating to his exiles and returns from exile in the Apology Against the Arians.

* the Apology for Origen, the first five books of which, according to the definite statement of Photius, were written by Pamphilus in prison, with the assistance of Eusebius.

Justin Martyr ( c. 155 ) in 1 Apology 66 wrote: "... the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels ".

The Against Marcion is lost, as is the Refutation of all Heresies to which Justin himself refers in Apology, i. 26 ; Hegesippus, besides perhaps Irenaeus and Tertullian, seems to have used it.

Justin uses material from the Synoptic Gospels ( Matthew, Mark, and Luke ) in the composition of the First Apology and the Dialogue, either directly, as in the case of Matthew, or indirectly through the use of a gospel harmony, which may have been composed by Justin or his school.

These two tracts may be from the same source, which may have been an early Christian Apology.

Examples of this usage may be seen in his Apology in which chapters 31 – 53 are specifically dedicated to proving Christ through prophecy.

Later, in his Apology ( 1580 ), William stated that his resolve to oppose the King's policies had originated in June 1559, when, during a hunting trip to the Bois de Vincennes together with the duke of Alva and King Henry II of France, to whom both had been sent as hostages to ensure the proper fulfilment of the conditions of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis following the Hispano-French war, the latter two had openly discussed a secret understanding between Philip and Henry which aimed at the extermination of the Protestants in both France and the Netherlands ; William at that time had kept silent, but had decided for himself that he would not allow the slaughter of so many innocent subjects.

He indicates this time in the Apology which he addressed to Antonine, where he writes as follows: ' We do not think it out of place to mention here Antinoüs also, who lived in our day, and whom all were driven by fear to worship as a god, although they knew who he was and whence he came '.

The Pensées is in fact a name given posthumously to his fragments, which he had been preparing for an Apology for the Christian Religion and which was never completed.

In the shortest of them ( 43 pages as of 2009 ), which he titles " Apology for the Proof of the Riemann Hypothesis " ( using the word " apology " in the rarely used sense of apologia ), he claims to use his tools on the theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions to prove the Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet L-functions ( thus proving GRH ) and a similar statement for the Euler zeta function, and even to be able to assert that zeros are simple.

He is usually known by those outside the field of mathematics for his essay from 1940 on the aesthetics of mathematics, A Mathematician's Apology, which is often considered one of the best insights into the mind of a working mathematician written for the layman.

" Although he admitted that what he called " real " mathematics may someday become useful, he asserted that, at the time in which the Apology was written, only the " dull and elementary parts " of either pure or applied mathematics could " work for good or ill ."

In fact, full communion is seen as an essential condition for sharing together in the Eucharist, apart from exceptional circumstances, in line with the second-century practice witnessed to by Saint Justin Martyr, who, in his First Apology, wrote: " No one is allowed to partake ( of the Eucharist ) but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.

It is only one of the three conditions ( baptism, right faith and right living ) for admission to receiving Holy Communion that the Catholic Church has always applied and that were already mentioned in the early 2nd century by Saint Justin Martyr: " And this food is called among us the Eucharist, of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined " ( First Apology, Chapter LXVI ).

" After painting " Man the Master and Not the Slave of Technology " on a concave aluminum panel in the lobby of the Polytechnic Institute, he painted " The Apology for the Future Victory of Science over Cancer " on panels which wrap around the lobby of cancer center.

In " An Apology for a Pamphlet ..." Milton refers to The Vision and Crede of Pierce Ploughman, which might mean one or both of these texts.

His Apology for the Believers in the Shakespeare Papers which were exhibited in Norfolk Street, appeared in 1797, followed by other tracts on the same subject.

Of his writings, of which there were likely many, there have been preserved but a few: his Embassy ( πρεσβεία ) for the Christians ( often referred to the Apology ), and a treatise titled the Resurrection of the Dead aka On the Resurrection of the Body.

The treatise on the Resurrection of the Dead, the first complete exposition of the doctrine in Christian literature, was written later than the Apology, to which it may be considered as an appendix.

Eusebius implies that other works were in circulation ; from St Irenaeus he knows of the apology " Against Marcion ," and from Justin's " Apology " of a " Refutation of all Heresies ".

The Apology of Plato unites him with Gorgias and Hippias as among those who were considered competent to instruct the youth in any city.

The Apology letters were written and addressed by name to the Roman Emperor Pius and the Roman Governor Urbicus.

The surviving manuscripts of the Historia Brittonum appear to be redacted from several lost versions: information about Nennius contained in the Prologue and in the Apology differs, the Prologue containing an expanded form of the Apology that is only found in editions copied during the 12th century, leading experts to believe that later versions of the document were altered.

An ABC News story in March 2002 repeated this, and during a report entitled " A Saudi Apology " for Dateline NBC on Aug 25 2002, NBC reporter John Hockenberry traveled to ' Asir, where he interviewed the third brother, Salah, who agreed that his two brothers were dead and claimed they had been " brainwashed ".

It was in this edition that the Notes and the " Apology for the & c ." ("& c ." was Swift's shorthand for Tale of a Tub: Nutt was supposed to expand the abbreviation out to the book's title but did not do so ; the mistake was left ) were added, which many contemporary readers and authors found a heating up of an already savage satire.

The differences of the German translation from the original Latin text of The Apology of the Augsburg Confession were made apparent by F. Bente's insertion of the variant readings of his English translation of the German text in square brackets into the main body of his translation of the original Latin text.

The reason for these differences partly stemmed from two editions of The Apology published in 1531: they were the " quarto edition " and the " octavo edition ": so called because of the manner in which they were printed.

In a report entitled " A Saudi Apology " for Dateline NBC aired on August 25, 2002, John Hockenberry traveled to Asir, where he interviewed Shehri's brother, Salah, who agreed that Wail and Waleed were deceased.

Section 2 ( Recognition ) and Section 3 ( Apology ) were deleted after the amendments.

In the autumn of 397 Rufinus embarked for Rome, where, finding that the theological controversies of the East were exciting much interest and curiosity, he published a Latin translation of the Apology of Pamphilus for Origen, and also ( 398-99 ) a somewhat free rendering of the Περι Αρχων ( or De Principiis ) of that author himself.

* De Adulteratione Librorum Origenis – an appendix to his translation of the Apology of Pamphilus, and intended to show that many of the features in Origen's teaching which were then held to be objectionable arise from interpolations and falsifications of the genuine text

The title and Apology were kept, but the result was wildly different ( Clemens's reaction is mildly suggested by the title of Johnson's Fall 1937 article in the Mark Twain Quarterly, " When Mark Twain Cursed Me "); so different, in fact, that one authority has said that it should have really been called The Harper Library of Humor.

Jewel's works were published in a folio in 1609 under the direction of Bancroft, who ordered the Apology to be placed in churches, in some of which it may still be seen chained to the lectern ; other editions appeared at Oxford ( 1848, 8 vols ) and Cambridge ( Parker Soc., 4 vols ).

It is probable that Hermogenes had indeed witnessed the trial: although Plato's Apology does not mention his presence, his Phaedo lists Hermogenes among those who were present at Socrates ' death.
