The term " gadfly " ( Ancient Greek: μύωψ, mýops ) was used by Plato in the Apology to describe Socrates ' relationship of uncomfortable goad to the Athenian political scene, which he compared to a slow and dimwitted horse.

Many scholars guess that Plato's Apology was one of the first, if not the very first, dialogues Plato wrote, though there is little if any hard evidence.

Plato indicates that the majority of judges voted in favor of the death penalty ( Apology 38c ), but he does not indicate exactly how many did.

Finally, whereas Socrates ' willingness to face the death penalty is in Plato's Apology explained by Socrates ' unwavering commitment to his divinely appointed mission to keep philosophizing at all costs, it is explained in the Xenophon / Hermogenes version by the claim that it is better for him to die now than to face the pains and limitations of advanced old age
