The boater can use the Macclesfield Canal to head for Marple, and the junction with the Peak forest Canal ( and hence, via the Ashton, Rochdale and Bridgewater canal ) to complete the ' Cheshire Ring '.

Parts of the track bed of the tramway to Denton Colliery can still be traced, both on modern maps and on the ground, as can traces of a canal, known as the Beat Bank Branch, intended to link local collieries to the Stockport branch of the Ashton Canal at Reddish, which was partially built and then abandoned.

** Ashton Canal

The Ashton Canal was constructed in the 1790s to transport coal from the area to Manchester, with a branch to the coal pits at Fairbottom.

The Peak Forest Canal terminates at Dukinfield Junction on the Ashton Canal, which passes through the town.

It was an established point of export using the meandering River Mersey, and by 1800 it had a thriving canal network, with links to the Ashton Canal, Rochdale Canal the Peak Forest Canal and Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal.
