Following the Baltimore riot of 1861, Union troops under the command of General Benjamin F. Butler occupied the hill in the middle of the night.

The Orioles actually led the fourth game, 12 – 4, but a riot broke out among the Baltimore home crowd in the top of the 9th inning, and the game was forfeited to Louisville, 9 runs to 0.

Task Force Baltimore peaked at 11, 570 Army and National Guard troops on April 9, of which all but about 500 were committed to riot control duties.

The riot had broken out mainly in the black ghettoes of East and West Baltimore in which extensive property damage and looting occurred.

The riot is mentioned on Baltimore based police dramas Homicide: Life on the Street and The Wire.

During the riot the 6th was attacked by a mob, the 6th broke and was chased by the mob through the streets of Baltimore, and the 6th's armory was attacked and the militia driven from their armory.

* 1861 – President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrives secretly in Washington, D. C., after the thwarting of an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland.

On April 21, 1861, American Civil War, a trainload of Union soldiers was mobbed by Confederate sympathizers in Baltimore, MD and arrived in Washington DC full of dead and wounded with no baggage or supplies.

Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service in 1861 – 1862 and foiled an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland, while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to his inauguration.

On July 26, 1861, the Department of the Shenandoah, commanded by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, was merged with McClellan's departments and on that day, McClellan formed the Army of the Potomac, which was composed of all military forces in the former Departments of Northeastern Virginia, Washington, Baltimore, and the Shenandoah.

In 1861 the PRR gained control of the Northern Central Railway, giving it access to Baltimore, Maryland, as well as points along the Susquehanna River via connections at Columbia, Pennsylvania or Harrisburg.

Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting: Chuck Thompson ( who was also the voice of the old NFL Baltimore Colts ); Jon Miller ( now with the San Francisco Giants ); Ernie Harwell, Herb Carneal ; Bob Murphy and Harry Caray ( as a St. Louis Browns announcer in the 1940s.

Engagements were also held at the Geary Theatre in San Francisco for eight months, the Hanna Theatre in Cleveland for nine weeks, the Majestic Theatre in Boston, the Apollo Theater in Chicago, and also in Philadelphia, Detroit, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Washington, D. C., and Baltimore.

Lord Baltimore also encouraged Marylanders to move east to settle the area.

Wheaton developed from Leesborough ( named in 1826 ), a business district which popped near the junction of three major roads: The first is Brookeville Pike ( also known as the " Washington-Brookeville Pike " and later as the " Union Turnpike ", now MD Route 97, Georgia Ave ) a north / south toll thoroughfare running from Washington, DC to Brookeville, Maryland and eventually to Baltimore, Maryland.
