The cathedral, also known as the Basilica La Seu, is said to have been founded in 343.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, or the Church of the Resurrection by Eastern Christians, is a church within the Christian Quarter of the walled Old City of Jerusalem.

Justinian also strengthened the borders of the Empire from Africa to the East through the construction of fortifications, and ensured Constantinople of its water supply through construction of underground cisterns ( see Basilica Cistern ).

The Cathedral Saint-Louis in Versailles ; the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, both in St. Louis, Missouri ; and the St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans were also named for the king.

He also encouraged architecture, and the general improvement of Rome, where houses were razed to straighten and widen streets and where he had the opportunity to be a great patron for Gian Lorenzo Bernini: the decorations of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, titular churches for several of the Chigi cardinals, the Scala Regia, the Chair of St. Peter in the Vatican Basilica.

Although he approved of the doctrine thus expressed, he also ordered that the Nicene Creed, without Filioque, be displayed on silver tablets placed in Saint Peter's Basilica, adding: " Haec Leo posui amore et cautela orthodoxae fidei " ( I, Leo, put these here for love and protection of orthodox faith ).

He was also archpriest of the patriarchal Liberian Basilica ( attested from 1262 ).

He also prescribed that acolytes should not presume to translate the relics of martyrs and that, in the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, they should not take the place of deacons in administering baptism.

He also immediately commissioned a representative tomb from the sculptor Pierre Le Gros the Younger to be erected in the Sistine Chapel of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

He also built a new oratory in St. Peter ’ s Basilica, which housed the relics of a number of saints, and convoked a synod in 732 in order to regulate the prayers and masses to be said there.

The complex cathedral which took the place of the Basilica of Paul at the end of the 5th century, constructed around an octagonal church, also rivaled the churches of Constantinople.

The president of France is also the ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra, Grand Master of the Légion d ' honneur and the Ordre national du Mérite and honorary proto-canon of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.

Roman law as preserved in the codes of Justinian and in the Basilica remained the basis of legal practice in Greece and in the courts of the Eastern Orthodox Church even after the fall of the Byzantine Empire and the conquest by the Turks, and also formed the basis for much of the Fetha Negest, which remained in force in Ethiopia until 1931.

The 11th-century Basilica of San Gavino in Porto Torres, Sassari, is also dedicated to this saint.

Vratislaus is credited with the establishment of St. George's Basilica at Prague Castle and also with the foundation of the Silesian city of Wrocław ( Vratislavia ).

Yamoussoukro is also the site of what is claimed to be the largest Christian place of worship on Earth: The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, consecrated by Pope John Paul II on 10 September 1990.

Bramante's work in the city, which included Santa Maria presso San Satiro ( a reconstruction of a small 9th-century church ), the beautiful luminous tribune of Santa Maria delle Grazie and three cloisters for Sant ' Ambrogio, drew also on his studies of the Early Christian architecture of Milan such as the Basilica of San Lorenzo.

He also restored and embellished the damaged Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura and St. Peter's: the latter's altar again received its gold covering ( after being stolen ), which weighed 206 lb.

He also begins work on the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze, also in Florence.

To the north is the closely built old town on the peninsula between two modern harbours, with the splendid Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of San Sabino ( 1035 – 1171 ) and the Swabian Castle built for Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district.

He attempts to ally Basilica with Potokgavan against the Gorayni ( also known as the Wetheads ).

He also erected a chapel of the Holy Cross in the baptistery, convents, two public baths, and libraries near the Basilica of St. Lawrence outside the Walls, in which church he was buried.

Several Roman Catholic Marian churches around the world have also been named after the rosary, e. g. Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica, in Rosario Argentina, the Rosary Basilica in Lourdes and Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

On 8 December 1854, in a great assembly of bishops in St Peter's Basilica at Rome, he promulgated the Bull Ineffabilis Deus, in which the history of the doctrine is summarily traced, and which contains the definition as given above

The Basilica of Aquileia ( northern Italy ) contains an apse fresco ( c. 1031 ) showing emperor Conrad II, his wife Gisela of Swabia and Patriarch Poppone of Aquileia.

Its proximity to Lake Como and to the Alps has made Como a popular tourist destination and the city contains numerous works of art, churches, gardens, museums, theatres, parks and palaces: the Duomo ( seat of Diocese of Como ), the Basilica of Sant ' Abbondio, the Villa Olmo, the public gardens with the Tempio Voltiano, the Teatro Sociale, the Broletto ( the city ’ s medieval town hall ) and the 20th century Casa del Fascio.

Saint Peter's Basilica contains yet another monument, the tomb of Pope Innocent III.

* Basilica of Santa Chiara ( St Clare ) with its massive lateral buttresses, rose window, and simple Gothic interior, begun in 1257, contains the tomb of the saint and 13th ‑ century frescoes and paintings.

The city's as well as the national Shrine of Francis of Assisi, the city's namesake which also contains a small reproduction of the Basilica of San Francesco d ' Assisi, is located in a small chapel on Vallejo Street.

The octagonal Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, was completed in 547 and contains a terracotta dome.

The church contains a celebrated miraculous image of the Holy Virgin, that of a Black Madonna ( Halle Basilica: ,).

The Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence, Italy, contains a number of cenotaphs including one for Dante Alighieri, who is buried in Ravenna.

Old Goa contains churches affiliated to various congregations, including the Se Cathedral ( the seat of the Archbishop of Goa ), the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of S. Caetano, and notably, the Basilica of Bom Jesus which contains the relics of Saint Francis Xavier, which is celebrated every year on 3 December with novenas beginning on 24 November.

The Dormition tradition is associated with various places, most notably with Jerusalem, which contains Mary's Tomb and the Basilica of the Dormition, and Ephesus, which contains the House of the Virgin Mary, and also with Constantinople.

* The East Tower contains nine bells including the largest bell, the St. John Bell, currently in the possession of the Basilica.

* The Basilica contains twenty-eight beautiful stained glass windows which adorn the upper walls and are of Irish, English and French workmanship.

The Ordo Rituum pro Ministerii Petrini Initio Romae Episcopi thus approved in 2005 contains not only the rite of the Mass of the Inauguration, but also that of the Mass of the Enthronement of the new Pope on the Cathedra Romana, the chair of the Bishop of Rome, in the Lateran Basilica, Rome's cathedral and the Roman Catholic Church's primary Basilica, outranking even the Vatican Basilica.

Its " La Pietà Mausoleum " contains a life-sized marble reproduction of Michelangelo's Pietà sculpture located in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.

Later that year, he returned to Zaragoza and painted parts of the cupolas of the Basilica of the Pillar ( including Adoration of the Name of God ), a cycle of frescoes in the monastic church of the Charterhouse of Aula Dei, and the frescoes of the Sobradiel Palace.

The bronze and silver doors of the Cassinese Basilica that Desiderius erected remain, and in the Church of Sant ' Angelo in Formis, near Capua, some of the frescoes executed by his orders may still be seen.

In 1455 Andrea del Castagno worked in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata ( frescoes with Trinity with Saints Jerome, Paula and Eustochium and St. Julian and the Redeemer, the former showing a stressed realism ).

Simone's other major works include the St. Louis of Toulouse Crowning the King at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples ( 1317 ), the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Polyptych in Pisa ( 1319 ) and the Annunciation with St. Margaret and St. Ansanus at the Uffizi in Florence ( 1333 ), as well as frescoes in the San Martino Chapel in the lower church of the Basilica of San Francesco d ' Assisi.

His portrait figures among the other likenesses of the popes in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, and among the frescoes of tenth-century popes painted in the thirteenth century on the walls of the ancient church of San Pietro a Grado, outside Pisa.

The frescoes in the Doge's Palace at Venice, on which they worked together, have perished as well as the frescoes in the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the palaces of Mantua and Pavia.

He also worked in oils and painted frescoes for the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

The History of the True Cross or The Legend of the True Cross is a sequence of frescoes painted by Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo.

Around this period, and together with Antoniazzo Romano, he painted frescoes in the Bessarione chapel in the Basilica dei Santi Apostoli in Rome.

His independent masterpiece is considered an extensive series of scriptural frescoes in the church of Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore ( Bergamo ).

The frescoes in the chapel of San Silvestro in the Florentine Basilica of Santa Croce are attributed to Giottino ; these represent the miracles of Pope St Sylvester as narrated in the " Golden Legend ".

Asperini painted in 1508-1509 the splendid frescoes in the Chapel of the Cross in the Basilica di San Frediano in Lucca.

During his stay in Assisi, he did not visit the famous Giotto frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco d ' Assisi, but only visited the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, a converted Roman temple there.
