Other minor communities and geographic features are: Bates Woods Park, Fort Trumbull, Glenwood Park, Green's Harbor Beach, Mitchell's Woods, Pequot Colony, Riverside Park, Old Town Mill.

Later reorganized as the Lewiston Water Power Company, the sales of stock attracted Boston investors — including Thomas J. Hill, Lyman Nichols, George L. Ward, Alexander De Witt, and Benjamin E. Bates ( namesake of the Bates Mill and Bates College ) – who financed a canal system and several textile mills on the Androscoggin River.

The Bates Mill remained the largest employer in Lewiston from the 1850s to the mid-late 20th century.

Following a difficult economic period in the 1980s that saw high unemployment and downtown stagnation, several key events have led to a period of economic and cultural renaissance, including the transformation of the historic Bates Mill Complex.

Platz Associates, then in 2003, sold the Bates Mill Complex, with the exception of Mill 5 and a small support building.

Anna Haining Bates, born Anna Haining Swan ( August 6, 1846 – August 5, 1888 ), was a Canadian from Mill Brook, New Annan, ( near present-day Tatamagouche ), Colchester County, Nova Scotia, famed for her great height, believed to be 2. 27 m ( 7 ' 5½ ") at the peak of her stature.

Today only a few remain: Bates Mill and Walk Mill ( both in private ownership ), Bunbury Mill and Trafford Mill.

When Stamford Bridge was redeveloped in the Ken Bates era many additional features were added to the complex including two hotels, apartments, bars, restaurants, the Chelsea Megastore, and an interactive visitor attraction called Chelsea World of Sport.

He was finally found in the Bates Hole region of Natrona County, two counties away.

Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful.

Just as Bates had been inspired to write her poem, Ward too was inspired to compose his tune.

Bates was more fortunate, as the song's popularity was well established by the time of her death in 1929.

Ellas Otha Bates ( December 30, 1928 – June 2, 2008 ), known by his stage name Bo Diddley, was an American rhythm and blues vocalist, guitarist, songwriter ( usually as Ellas McDaniel ), and rock and roll pioneer.

Born in McComb, Mississippi, as Ellas Otha Bates, he was adopted and raised by his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel, whose surname he assumed, becoming Ellas McDaniel.

By 1990, after efforts by Wendy's agency, Backer Spielvolgel Bates, to get humor into the campaign, a decision was made to portray Thomas in a more self-deprecating and folksy manner, which proved much more popular with test audiences.
