The Battle of Malakoff was a major battle during the Crimean War, fought between French-British forces against Russia on 7 September 1855 as a part of the Siege of Sevastopol.

The Battle of Malakoff resulted in the fall of Sevastopol on 9 September, bringing the 11-month siege to an end.

For his brilliant conduct at the Battle of Malakoff in 1855 he was promoted to General of division.

Niel managed to carry out this delicate and difficult task with as much success as could be expected, and he directed siege operations at the Battle of Malakoff.

In the Crimean War, he distinguished himself in the Battle of Malakoff at Sevastopol ( 8 September 1855 ), during which he reputedly uttered the famous quotation now attributed to him: J ' y suis, j ' y reste (" Here I am, here I stay ").
