After the United States Navy Commodore Matthew C. Perry's Black Ships forcibly opened Japan to foreign trade and the shogunate proved incapable of hindering the " barbarian " interlopers, the Emperor Kōmei began to assert himself politically.

The psychological shock of the Western " Black Ships " and the subsequent collapse of the shogunate convinced many that the nation needed to unify in order to resist being colonized by outside forces.

McCabe and Jones have since started their own project, The Black Ships, who later changed their name to Black Submarine, along with electric violinist and arranger Davide Rossi and drummer Mig Schillace.

The inhabitants of Japan experienced a long period of relative isolation from the outside world during the Tokugawa shogunate, until the arrival of " The Black Ships " and the Meiji period.

However, despite these efforts, in 1853, United States naval Commodore Matthew Perry arrived in Tokyo Bay with his fleet of Black Ships and came ashore at Kurihama, in southern Yokosuka, leading to the opening of diplomatic and trade relations between Japan and the United States.

Perry sailed on his four " Black Ships " into Edo Bay on July 8, 1853, and began negotiations with the Tokugawa shogunate that led to a peace and trade treaty between the United States and Japan in 1854.

The Kobusho was an exclusive military training school, primarily for the use of the shogunal retainers, set up by the Shogunate in 1855 in order to reform the military system after the arrival of Perry's Black Ships.

In July 8, 1853, when Commodore Matthew Perry's Black Ships arrived to force the opening of Japan, Manjirō became an interpreter and translator for the Shogunate and was instrumental in negotiating the Convention of Kanagawa.

The name Odaiba comes from a series of six island fortresses constructed in 1853 by Egawa Hidetatsu for the Tokugawa shogunate in order to protect Edo from attack by sea, the primary threat being Commodore Matthew Perry's Black Ships which had arrived in the same year.

Having risen to power soon after the Black Ships episode, he is held to have been responsible for the Unequal Treaties ( Convention of Kanagawa, Anglo-Japanese Friendship Treaty, Harris Treaty, Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce ) which broke the sakoku and opened the Japanese frontliners to foreign influences.

However, in the film we momentarily see a single blossom of " hope " on the previously dead tree during the Siege of Gondor and the imminent arrival of Aragorn on the Black Ships.

The appearance of the Black Ships of Perry in the Tokyo Bay would be the start of a new era in the history of Japan.

Whereas the demi-gods of the various worlds such as Ruby-Eye Shabranigdo and Dark Star Dugradigdo had physical presence in that world, they appear in the Black World as " Lost Ships ", intelligent space ships of unknown origin that have powerful or somewhat divine powers with more advanced technology than any other device in the universe.

David Tibet of the apocalyptic folk band Current 93 released a collection of her recordings, entitled Fountain of Snow, and she sings on the final version of " Idumæa " on Current 93's 2006 album Black Ships Ate the Sky.

Although the notion seems appealing, the arrival of the Black Ships and Commodore Matthew C. Perry is not specifically recognized as a factor in the change of era names.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Dix wrote " From Slave Ships to the Superdome in New Orleans ", contending that " In a hundred thousand ways Katrina laid bare the unequal and oppressive relations Black people are forced to endure under this system … As long as power is left in the hands of these capitalist exploiters, we ’ ll continue to see the kind of suffering seen in New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta area in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
