Finally, in January 1864, after long resisting the plan, Carson sent a company into Canyon de Chelly to investigate the last Navajo stronghold, presuming them to be under the leadership of Manuelito.

Thousands of other Navajo who had been living in the wilderness returned to the Navajo homeland centered around Canyon de Chelly.

In September 1540, under orders from the conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado to search for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola, Captain Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, along with Hopi guides and a small group of Spanish soldiers, traveled to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon between Desert View and Moran Point.

Pablo de Melgrossa, Juan Galeras, and a third soldier descended some one third of the way into the Canyon until they were forced to return because of lack of water.

Fathers Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante were two Spanish priests who, with a group of Spanish soldiers, explored southern Utah and traveled along the North Rim of the Canyon in Glen and Marble Canyons in search of a route from Santa Fe to California in 1776.

After the Spanish Reconquest of 1692, Taos Pueblo continued armed resistance to the Spanish until 1696, when Governor Diego de Vargas defeated the Indians at Taos Canyon.

The name in Navajo means " flowing out " and is a reference to the location where the water flows out of the Canyon de Chelly.

Schools in the area considered to be Chinle include Mesa View Elementary School ( K-6 ), Tsaile Elementary ( K-8 ), Many Farms School ( K-8 ), Canyon de Chelly Elementary School ( 1-3 ), Chinle Elementary School ( 4-6 ), Chinle Junior High School ( 7-8 ), and Chinle High School ( 9-12 ).

The land on which Fort Defiance was eventually established was first noted by white military men when Colonel John Washington stopped there on his return journey from an expedition to Canyon de Chelly.

Tsaile is located at ( 36. 304753 ,-109. 223385 ), about east of Chinle, just outside the boundaries of Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

They shared an apartment, and often played the Canyon Land Amusement Park.

The history of the company is the theme of the White Deer Land Museum in Pampa, but company archives are at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon.

The Afton Canyon Natural Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, is located 37 miles northeast of Barstow along Interstate 15 between the Afton Road and Basin Road exits.

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is a National Conservation Area ( NCA ) administered by the United States Bureau of Land Management ( BLM ).

Yale riding spanned both Yale and Kootenay Land Districts, that is to say, the entirety of the southern province from the Fraser Canyon to the Rockies.

The official definition of the Yale District and Yale ridings ( that is, the original Yale riding, not the second ) is all of both the Yale and Kootenay Land Districts, which took in the whole of the province from the Fraser Canyon to the Rocky Mountains and including the Kamloops and Shuswap areas.

Rattlesnake Canyon is a scenic area within the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness which in turn forms the core of the Bureau of Land Management administered McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area in west central Colorado.

The Bear Trap Canyon unit is managed by the U. S. Bureau of Land Management ( an agency within the U. S. Department of the Interior ), and comprises a region of canyonlands adjacent to the Madison River.

Bear Trap Canyon is the very first designated wilderness area to be managed by the Bureau of Land Management anywhere in the U. S. The other three sections of the wilderness are jointly managed by Beaverhead-Deerlodge and Gallatin National Forests both of which are a part of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Created in 1975, the Wilderness is managed by both the U. S. Bureau of Land Management and the U. S. Forest Service and contains some of the most spectacular sections of the Snake River as it winds its way through Hells Canyon, North America's deepest river gorge and one of the deepest gorges on Earth.

It lies entirely within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area except for a small plot in southeastern Wallowa County, Oregon which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
