We were camping a few weeks ago on Cape Hatteras Campground in that land of pirates, seagulls and bluefish on North Carolina's famed Outer Banks.

A five-masted schooner built in 1919, the Carroll A. Deering was found hard aground and abandoned at Diamond Shoals, near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on January 31, 1921.

* 1857 – The SS Central America sinks about 160 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, drowning a total of 426 passengers and crew, including Captain William Lewis Herndon.

* December 30 – The USS Monitor sinks in storm in the Atlantic off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

In the western Atlantic Ocean, cod has a distribution north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and around both coasts of Greenland ; in the eastern Atlantic, it is found from the Bay of Biscay north to the Arctic Ocean, including the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, Sea of the Hebrides, areas around Iceland and the Barents Sea.

In the western side of the North Atlantic, there are at least two populations, separated by Cape Hatteras in North Carolina.

The Gulf Stream can carry fry spawned to the south of Cape Hatteras to the north, and eddies can spin off, carrying them into populations found off the coast of the mid-Atlantic, and the New England states.

The nearest landmass is Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, about west-northwest ( see Geography section below ).

While sunken ships from the Spanish Main ( such as Nuestra Señora de Atocha in the Florida Keys ) are the most commonly thought of type of treasure salvage, other types of ships including German submarines from World War II which can hold valuable historical artifacts, American Civil War ships ( the USS Maple Leaf in the St. Johns River, and the CSS Virginia in Chesapeake Bay ), and sunken merchant ships ( the SS Central America off Cape Hatteras ) have all been the subject of treasure salvage awards.

Dare County is home to two popular lighthouses: The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Though Spanish sailors probably frequented the island on their way to intercept the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, Pedro de Quexos was the first documented explorer of the region in the 1520s, naming what is now Santee River the " River Jordan.

In April 1991, mass murderer Peter Lundin strangled his mother to death in Maggie Valley, and with the help of his father he buried her body on a beach at Cape Hatteras, where it was found eight months later.

Other than the village of Ocracoke and a few other areas ( a ferry terminal, a pony pen, a small runway ), the entire island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The sanctuary provided by US National Parks, such as Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and Cape Hatteras National Seashore, among others, have also become major factors in sustaining populations.

In coastal areas such as Plymouth, Cape Cod, Long Island, Sandy Hook, North Manitou Island in Lake Michigan, and most recently, Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, beach access to pedestrians and ORVs has been limited to protect piping plovers and their chicks at critical times of the breeding season.

It is a body of water separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Outer Banks, a row of low, sandy barrier islands, including Cape Hatteras.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Cape Lookout National Seashore are located on the barrier islands.
