The Northern District consists the city of Lowell and the towns of Billerica, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Westford and Wilmington.

From June 24 – 28, 1863, much of the Army of Northern Virginia passed through Chambersburg en route to Carlisle and Gettysburg, and Robert E. Lee established his headquarters at a nearby farm.

The European route E18 starts in Northern Ireland and runs from Craigavon ( M1 ) – Belfast ( M2, A8 ) – Larne, then to Scotland: Stranraer, Wigtownshire ( A75 ) – Gretna ( M6 ) – Carlisle ( A69 ) to Newcastle.

Northern Spirit had introduced a daily Leeds to Glasgow Central via the Settle & Carlisle and West Coast Main Lines in September 1999.

A shortage of available rolling stock to meet increasing demand led Arriva Trains Northern to lease Class 37s and Mark 2 carriages from EWS to top and tail a daily service from Leeds to Carlisle for 12 months from September 2003.

The former regional franchisee Arriva Trains Northern initiated a twice daily Leeds – Glasgow Central service in 1999 ( calling at Settle, Appleby, Carlisle, Lockerbie and Motherwell ), but this was withdrawn at the behest of the Strategic Rail Authority in 2003, and there remains no link from Yorkshire or the East Midlands to Glasgow over the line.

CFM Radio is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Northern & Central Cumbria and the southern tip of Scotland, with transmitters in Carlisle, Penrith and West Cumbria.

Northern Rail operates local and regional services across the North East and Cumbria, notably along the Tyne Valley Line to Carlisle via MetroCentre and Hexham, northbound to Morpeth and southbound to Middlesbrough and Sunderland while East Coast provides services to Durham and Darlington.

There are supplementary long wave transmitters in Scotland ( Burghead & Westerglen, both 50 kW ), with medium-wave transmitters in London ( Crystal Palace 750 W ), South West England ( Plymouth 1 kW ), Newcastle area ( 2 kW ), Carlisle area ( 1 kW ), Aberdeen area ( 2 kW ) and Northern Ireland ( Lisnagarvey 10 kW, Londonderry 250 W & Enniskillen 1 kW ).

More recently in 2010-11 and 2011-12 former Carlisle and Northern Ireland U21 international defender Darren Kelly played at the club, making 39 appearances and scoring 8 goals.

In addition, local services are operated by Northern Rail between Lancaster and Barrow, with some continuing to Sellafield or Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Barrow receives 13 services from the Northern part of the line, with eight trains from Carlisle, three trains from Millom, one train from Maryport and one train from Sellafield.

Platform 1, which contains the entrance to the station, is used primarily for Northern Rail through trains ( from Lancaster / Preston to Carlisle ) heading north, or First TransPennine Express services heading to / arriving from Manchester Airport.

In 1967, the Ludlow Realty Company sold the remaining Lagoon property to Ludlow Development Enterprises Inc. ( Carlisle Construction, King Wrecking Co., et al .).

The initial stretch is newly-opened as part of the Carlisle Northern Development Route, a road bypassing Carlisle from west to north.

These are being expanded at part of the Sustrans Connect2 project and will make up part of the National Cycle Route 74 which will run from Glasgow to Carlisle, Cumbria

New York State Route 162 crosses the northeast corner of Carlisle.

One of the last major railway closures was of the 98-mile long ( 158 km ) Waverley Route main line between Carlisle, Hawick and Edinburgh in 1969 ; the re-opening of a 35-mile section of this line was approved by the Scottish Parliament and passenger services are due to resume in 2014.

In addition, due to the Quinn Road ramp being closed to two way traffic, the only way to exit following games is to either take Clove Road, which leads to Route 46, or drive back across campus on Carlisle Road and exit via Normal Avenue.

There is also the option of starting at Workington and / or finishing at Tynemouth and also a link route at Penrith to join up with the Glasgow to Carlisle section of the National Cycle Route.

The first major extension of the system was a branch to Hawick ( completed 1849 ); this was subsequently extended ( by the Border Union Railway ) to give a through route to the West Coast Mainline at Carlisle ( 1862 ), but the West Coast companies had a secret agreement to continue to route goods traffic to Edinburgh via the ( less direct ) Caledonian, rather than the NBR's " Waverley Route " and to obstruct / delay goods arriving from Edinburgh via the Waverley Route.

To obtain access to Carlisle, the NBR had bought the Carlisle and Silloth Bay Railway and Dock Company and with it dock facilities at Silloth on the Irish Sea ; from there sea transport to Liverpool was possible, but for the most part the West Coast blockade was effective and made the Waverley Route little more than a £ 5m branch line.

* January 5 – Last trains over the Waverley Route from Edinburgh in Scotland to Carlisle in England.

The V2s performed equally competently for British Railways, leaving their mark on the East Coast Main Line, the Waverley Route between Carlisle and Edinburgh and on the ex-Great Central main line between London Marylebone and Sheffield.

The town is situated on Route 132 between Saint-Siméon and New Carlisle.

The school district is located along Pennsylvania Route 94 ( Carlisle Pike ) outside of York Springs The district operates Bermudian Springs High School, Bermudian Springs Middle School and Bermudian Springs Elementary School.

For comparison purposes that is approximately the same size as Aylesbury, Carlisle, Guildford or Scunthorpe urban areas.

One exception is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which locates Arthur's court at " Camelot "; however, in Britain, Arthur's court was generally located at Caerleon, or at Carlisle, which is usually identified with the " Carduel " of the French romances.

Carlisle ( or, from Cumbric: Caer Luel ) is the county town of Cumbria, and the major settlement of the wider City of Carlisle in North West England.

Carlisle is located at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, south of the Scottish border.

It is the largest settlement in the county of Cumbria, and serves as the administrative centre for both Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council.

Historically part of Cumberland, the early history of Carlisle is marked by its status as a Roman settlement, established to serve the forts on Hadrian's Wall.

Nicknamed the Border City, Carlisle today is the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre for north Cumbria.

Much of the ancient history of Carlisle is still unknown and what is known is derived mainly from archaeological evidence and the works of Roman historian Gaius Tacitus.

As a result it is likely greater control was achieved at Carlisle over anti-imperialist groups.

Something which is signified by the fact the fort at Carlisle was able to be refurbished in 83AD using oak timbers from further afield rather than the local Alder.

While it is not clear, it seems likely that the kingdom took its name from a major stronghold within it and it has been suggested that this was broadly conterminous with the earlier Civitas Carvetiorum, Carlisle.

Carlisle also used to have the largest railway marshalling yard in Europe at Kingmoor which, although reduced in size, is still very much operational today and is used by several major railfreight companies.

Carlisle City Council is based in a 1960s building known as the Civic Centre in Rickergate.
