This trend was begun in 1911, when, under the pseudonym Chester K. Steele, Stratemeyer published The Mansion of Mystery ( which he had written himself ).

In the Chester Mystery Plays ' portrayal of Christ's Passion, specifically his humiliation before his sentence to crucifixion, the accounts of the Gospels concerning the physical violence visited on Jesus during his trial before the Sanhedrin, and the humiliating crowning of thorns visited upon him in Pilate's palace ( or by Herod's soldiers, according to Luke ), is further confused by showing both actions as being carried out by jeering Jews.

The Chester Midsummer Watch Parade, begun in 1498, was held at every Summer Solstice in years when the Chester Mystery Plays were not performed.

His last major acting role was in the 1975 film Robin Hood Junior, although he had two small roles with Tom Courtenay in the Chester Mystery Cycle ( 1976 ) and 23 years later in the 1999 film Whatever Happened to Harold Smith ?.

The most complete is the York cycle of forty-eight pageants ; there are also the Towneley plays of thirty-two pageants, once thought to have been a true ' cycle ' of plays acted at Wakefield ; the Ludus Coventriae ( also called the N Town plays " or Hegge cycle ), now generally agreed to be a redacted compilation of at least three older, unrelated plays, and the Chester cycle of twenty-four pageants, now generally agreed to be an Elizabethan reconstruction of older medieval traditions.

While the Chester pageants are associated with guilds, there is no indication that the N-Town plays are either associated with guilds or performed on pageant wagons.

The John Dalton Building, located on Chester Street is the home of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
