Before the establishment of the Chickamauga Post in 1902 by United States Army, an unincorporated city existed, where Fort Oglethorpe was later established, called Hargrave, Georgia after the name of the land owner and ex-Confederate soldier, William Hamilton Hargrave.

He served throughout the Civil War and took part as a private in the Battle of Wilson's Creek, and as a colonel commanded the Tenth Texas Infantry at Arkansas Post, Chickamauga ( where he commanded a brigade during part of the battle ), Missionary Ridge and the Atlanta Campaign.

They migrated to the area surrounding Chickamauga River ( South Chickamauga Creek ) in the present-day Chattanooga area, where they established eleven towns in 1777, including the one later referred to as " Old Chickamauga Town.

They were joined by groups of Shawnee and Creek at this new settlement, which had been established along Chickamauga Creek – which became their namesake.

On June 26, 1902 or July 8, 1902, Porter received the Medal of Honor for the Battle of Chickamauga as detailed in the citation noted below.

The county is represented by Chickamauga Republican Jeff Mullis in the State Senate.

When the Chickamauga Dam was completed on the Tennessee River by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1940, much of the city was flooded, as portrayed in the 1960 movie Wild River.

After Union Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans was defeated at the Battle of Chickamauga, Burnside was pursued by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, against whose troops he had battled at Marye's Heights.

A few years later, after the Treaty of Long Island, Dragging Canoe and his now considerably grown number of followers, removed themselves further from the other Cherokee villages — as well as the Euro-American settlements — by following the Tennessee River further downstream into the remote area of the Chickamauga River ( near modern day Chattanooga ).

Early during the American Revolutionary War, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals was the attacked in 1776 by Dragging Canoe and his warring faction of Cherokee opposed to the Transylvania Purchase ( also referred by settlers as the Chickamauga ), and the surviving frontier Fort Watauga on the banks of the Watauga River.

However, reinforced by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's First Corps from the Army of Northern Virginia, the Army of Tennessee was able to inflict a significant defeat on Rosecrans at Chickamauga in September 1863.

While there was no National Park Service in the United States until 1916, battlefields of the Civil War were designated and managed by the War Department: Chickamauga and Chattanooga ( created 1890 ), Antietam ( 1890 ), Shiloh ( 1894 ), Gettysburg ( 1895 ), Vicksburg ( 1899 ), and Chalmette ( 1907 ).

In 1775, a faction of Cherokees led by Dragging Canoe — angry over the tribe's appeasement of European settlers — split off to form what became known as the Chickamauga faction, which was concentrated around what is now Chattanooga.

From their location, they were called the Chickamauga by frontiersmen, who later called them the Lower Cherokee.

They were also celebrating a recent victory by a Chickamauga war band on the Cumberland River settlements.

Hazen's brigade played a major role in the crossing at Brown's Ferry near Chattanooga that, together with the arrival of troops under Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, opened the line of supply or " Cracker Line " to the Army of the Cumberland, penned into its defenses by the Confederates .. Hazen was promoted to brevet major in the regular army for Chickamauga and brevet lieutenant colonel for Chattanooga.

Some Cherokee returned to the Hiwassee Valley after the Revolution, but the center of the Cherokee culture had moved south and west to northwest Georgia, occupied by the Cherokee known as the Chickamauga.

The Chickamauga, a faction of the Cherokee led by Dragging Canoe, and the Shawnee were already at war with the " Long Knives " starting in 1776, in the Chickamauga Wars, which merged into the Northwest Indian Wars.

The earliest Cherokee occupation dates from Dragging Canoe, who in 1776 separated himself and moved downriver from the main tribe to establish American Indian resistance ( see Chickamauga Wars ) to European settlement in the southeastern United States.

General George H. Thomas, " Rock of Chickamauga ", and a native of Southampton County, was a Union general and graduate of the United States Military Academy, likely visited his uncle James Rochelle, clerk of court for Southampton County, located just three houses away from Mahone's Tavern, home of William Mahone.

On 10 July 1898, Davis joined the 8th U. S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a first lieutenant of Company G. The 8th United States Volunteer Infantry was stationed at Chickamauga Park, Georgia, from October 1898 until the unit was disbanded in March 1899.

The Holston Formation, alternately known as the Holston Limestone, is a stratigraphic unit of Ordovician age within the Chickamauga Group in the Ridge-and-Valley physiographic province of the southeastern United States.

Geary started his professional career designing commercial vessels, including Chickamauga, the first diesel-powered tug in the United States, commercial and fishing vessels, and during World War I, large 330-foot wooden-hulled freighters.

After the Battle of Chickamauga, Confederate General Braxton Bragg forced Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans's Army of the Cumberland to retreat into Chattanooga, a central railway hub, surrounded the city and kept the Union army from escaping.

Only Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas and the XIV corps kept the Army of the Cumberland from complete defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Garfield opposed Confederate secession, served as a Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and fought in the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh and Chickamauga.

When Rodes was promoted to major general and given a division in the Army of Northern Virginia, Morgan declined an offer to command Rodes's old brigade and instead remained in the Western Theater, leading troops at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Chickamauga was a great tactical victory for Bragg, but instead of pursuing and destroying the Union Army as it retreated, he laid siege to it in Chattanooga, concentrating his effort against the enemies inside his army instead of his enemies from the North.
