During the rule of emperor Guang Xu in the Qing Dynasty ( 1875 – 1908 ), Hui Gen, an abbot from Mount Putuo went on a pilgrimage to Tibet via the two famous Chinese mountains Mount Wutai and Mount Emei.
Mount Putuo is one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism, the others being Mount Wutai, Mount Jiuhua, and Mount Emei ( Bodhimandas for Manjusri, Ksitigarbha, and Samantabhadra, respectively ).
During the Tang dynasty, along with the development of sea silk road, Putuo Mountain became the center of Chinese Buddhism for Guanyin.
