During the rule of emperor Guang Xu in the Qing Dynasty ( 1875 – 1908 ), Hui Gen, an abbot from Mount Putuo went on a pilgrimage to Tibet via the two famous Chinese mountains Mount Wutai and Mount Emei.

Mount Putuo is one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism, the others being Mount Wutai, Mount Jiuhua, and Mount Emei ( Bodhimandas for Manjusri, Ksitigarbha, and Samantabhadra, respectively ).

During the Tang dynasty, along with the development of sea silk road, Putuo Mountain became the center of Chinese Buddhism for Guanyin.

The Putuo district is home to populations representing 44 minorities, the largest of whom are Chinese Muslims from the country's northwest.

Robert Temple quotes an account from Zhang Yan's Zhongdou xinshu ( 種痘新書 ), or New book on smallpox inoculation, written in 1741 during the Qing Dynasty ( 1644 – 1912 ), which shows how the Chinese process had become refined up until that point:

The Longshan Temple, built in 1738 and located in the Wanhua District, demonstrates an example of architecture with southern Chinese influences commonly seen on older buildings in Taiwan.
