There have been attempts to incorporate democracy, republicanism, and industrialism into Chinese philosophy, notably by Sun Yat-Sen ( Sūn yì xiān, in one Mandarin form of the name ) at the beginning of the 20th century.
Unlike Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek was socially conservative, promoting traditional Chinese culture in the New Life Movement and rejecting western democracy and the nationalist democratic socialism that Sun Yat-sen and some other members of the KMT embraced in favor of a nationalist authoritarian government.
Sun Yat-sen's career was at its lowest point then, with most of his old Revolutionary Alliance comrades refusing to join him in the exiled Chinese Revolutionary Party.
In 1927, when he was setting up the Nationalist government in Nanjing, he was preoccupied with " the elevation of our leader Dr. Sun Yat-sen to the rank of ' Father of our Chinese Republic '.

The Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese ( 香港華人西醫書院 ) was founded in 1887 by the London Missionary Society, with its first graduate ( in 1892 ) being Sun Yat-sen ( 孫中山 ).
