The NASA Constellation Program announced Altair as the name of the Lunar Surface Access Module ( LSAM ) on December 13, 2007.

The first flight of the Ares rocket ( not to be confused with the similarly named rocket of the now defunct Constellation Program ) would bring an unmanned Earth Return Vehicle to the red planet after a 6 month cruise phase, with a supply of hydrogen, a chemical plant and a small nuclear reactor.

It provides leadership in astrobiology ; small satellites ; robotic lunar exploration ; technologies for the Constellation Program ; the search for habitable planets ; supercomputing ; intelligent / adaptive systems ; advanced thermal protection ; and airborne astronomy.

Before it was cancelled by President Barack Obama in early 2010, the Constellation Program had been a major activity in NASA since 2004.

With the NASA Authorization Act of 2005 formalizing the findings of the Exploration Systems Architecture Study, work began on this revised Constellation Program to send astronauts first to the International Space Station, then to the Moon, and afterward to Mars and other destinations beyond.

Subsequent to the findings of the Augustine Committee that the Constellation Program could not be executed without very substantial increases in funding, on February 1, 2010, President Barack Obama announced a proposal to cancel the program, effective with the U. S. 2011 fiscal year budget, but later announced changes to the proposal in a major space policy speech at Kennedy Space Center on April 15, 2010.

NASA would have used the vehicles of the Constellation Program to replace the Space Shuttle.

Unlike the Saturn V and Space Shuttle, where the crew and cargo were launched together on the same rocket, NASA planned to use two separate launch vehicles for the Constellation Program – the Ares I for crew and the Ares V for cargo.

The Constellation Program thus combined the Lunar Orbit Rendezvous method which was used by Apollo with the Earth Orbit Rendezvous method.

This came at a time when the Obama administration was taking a considerable amount of criticism for leaving the Constellation Program out of the 2011 budget.

Like that of the Apollo Program, Constellation program will involve its main vehicle, the Orion spacecraft, flying missions in low earth orbit ( LEO ) with an emphasis of servicing the International Space Station, and in conjunction with the Altair and Earth Departure Stage, on flights to the polar regions of the Moon.

In January 2005, Noriega retired from the NASA Astronaut Corps but continues to serve as the Manager, Advanced Projects Office, Constellation Program, Johnson Space Center.

In spaceflight, especially for NASA's Constellation Program, the term sortie has been used for a flight of the Orion spacecraft beyond the confluence of low-Earth orbit, such as a flight to the Moon or to the Sun-Earth L < sub > 2 </ sub > Lagrange Point.

NASA planned to use the Michoud Assembly Facility to build the structure for several components of the cancelled Constellation Program, including the Orion spacecraft, the Ares I Upper Stage, and the Ares V Core Stage.

In 1968 Skymaster transport aircraft was replaced with a C-121J Constellation.

The program's funding was denied in 2011 by the Obama administration and the Constellation program ended.

Constellation, a Bush Administration program for a return to the Moon by 2020 was judged inadequately funded and unrealistic by an expert review panel reporting in 2009.

According to the Vision for Space Exploration, the next manned NASA program was to be Project Constellation with its Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles and the Orion Spacecraft ; however, the Constellation program was never fully funded, and in early 2010 the Obama administration asked Congress to instead endorse a plan with heavy reliance on the private sector for delivering cargo and crew to LEO.

Although the Constellation program was canceled it has been replaced with a very similar beyond low-Earth orbit program.

Lockheed produced a larger transport, the double-decked R6V Constitution, which was intended to make the Constellation obsolete.

Anderson was nominated in the category for " Best Male Performance in a 2008 Science Fiction Film, TV Movie, or Mini-Series " at the Constellation Awards in 2009 for his work in Stargate: Continuum ( 2008 ), where he reprised his role as O ' Neill.

* On 27 July 1955, a Lockheed Constellation operating El Al Flight 402, was shot down by two Bulgarian Air Force fighter jets over Blagoevgrad, near Sofia, Bulgaria, after it strayed into Bulgarian airspace in rough weather.

With the initiation of the Constellation program in 2004, the knowledge gained on the OSP was transferred to Johnson Space Center ( JSC ) for use in the development of the Crew Exploration Vehicle.

A rematch was arranged, but while Cerdan was flying back to the United States to fight the rematch, his Air France Lockheed Constellation crashed in the Azores, killing everyone on board.

Since 1941, the advanced pressurised Lockheed Constellation had been under development, and in 1946 BOAC was permitted to use dollars to purchase an initial fleet of five for the prestigious North Atlantic route ( there were no equivalent British types available ).
