Natural bitumen from the Dead Sea

Ammon (; ), also referred to as the Ammonites and children of Ammon, was an ancient nation described in the Old Testament to be located east of the Jordan River, Gilead, and the Dead Sea, in present-day Jordan .< ref >

One of the Dead Sea Scrolls ( 4Q535, Manuscript B ) is written from Amram's point of view, and hence has been dubbed the Testament of Amram.

The text of the Thanksgiving Hymns — which was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls — tells of " the Sheol of Abaddon " and of the " torrents of Belial burst into Abaddon ".

The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox receive several additional books in to their canons based upon their presence in manuscripts of the ancient translation of the Old Testament in to Greek, the Septuagint ( although some of these books, such as Sirach and Tobit, are now known to be extant in Hebrew or Aramaic originals, being found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls ).

Jews, Protestants, and Catholics all use the Masoretic text as the textual basis for their translations of the protocanonical books ( those which are received by both Jews and all Christians ), with various emendations derived from a multiplicity of other ancient witnesses ( such as the Septuagint, the Vulgate, the Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.

With the discovery of the Dead Sea scroll, 4QDan < sup > c </ sup > at Qumran, dating 125 BCE, it does not reassure critics that Daniel was written in the 2nd century BCE.

According to John J. Collins in his 1993 commentary, Daniel, Hermeneia Commentary, the Aramaic in Daniel is of a later form than that used in the Samaria correspondence, but slightly earlier than the form used in the Dead Sea Scrolls, meaning that the Aramaic chapters 2-6 may have been written earlier in the Hellenistic period than the rest of the book, with the vision in chapter 7 being the only Aramaic portion dating to the time of Antiochus.

The Hebrew portion is, for all intents and purposes, identical to that found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, meaning chapters 1 and 8-12 were in existence before the late 2nd century BC.

The visions of Daniel, with those of 1 Enoch, Isaiah, Jubilees, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, are the inspiration for much of the apocalyptic ideology and symbolism of the Qumran community's Dead Sea scrolls and the early literature of Christianity.

Three Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls fragments known as The Prayer of Nabonidus ( 4QPrNab, sometimes given as 4QOrNab ) seem to parallel the insanity suffered by Nebuchadnezzar as described in Daniel Chapter 4.

These tiny fragments turned up in a collection of Dead Sea Scrolls possessed by the Jordanian Government, and were first published by Milik in 1956.

Parts of the Book of Jeremiah have also been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls in cave 4 in Qumran.

This discovery has shed much light on the differences between the two versions ; while it was previously maintained that the Greek Septuagint ( the version used by the earliest Christians ) was only a poor translation, professor Emanuel Tov, senior editor of the Dead Sea Scrolls ' publication, wrote that the Masoretic edition either represents a substantial rewriting of the original Hebrew, or there had previously been two different versions of the text.

The oldest surviving manuscripts of Isaiah are two scrolls found among the Dead Sea Scrolls: dating from about a century before the time of Jesus, they are substantially identical with the Masoretic version which forms the basis of most modern English-language versions of the book.

( Isaiah was the most popular prophet among the Dead Sea collection: 21 copies of the scroll were found in Qumran.

Esther is the only book of the Tanakh that is not represented among the Dead Sea scrolls.

Among the Dead Sea Scrolls is the Targum of Job 11Q10.

Another example of text from the last chapter or epilogue of Job can be found in the book The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation, showing examples of how fragments of The Book of Job found among the scrolls differ from the text as now known.

Ezekiel appears briefly in the Dead Sea Scrolls, but his influence there was profound, most notably in the Temple Scroll with its temple plans, and the defence of the Zadokite priesthood in the Damascus Document.

Fragments of the book were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls ( DSS ) ( 4Q76 aka 4QMinorProphets < sup > a </ sup >, Col V-VI, frags.

A copy of these chapters is included in the Habakkuk Commentary, found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

A commentary on the first two chapters of the book was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran.

A partial copy of Habakkuk itself is included in the Habakkuk Commentary, a pesher found among the original seven Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in 1947.

Its omission from the Dead Sea Scrolls is attributed to the inability of the Qumran sect to fit Habakkuk's theology with their own narrow viewpoint.

The best known of these are the Essenes of Qumran, who left an extensive library known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
