Assembled by record producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, MFSB was the house band for their Philadelphia International Records label and originated the signature smooth " Philly sound " sound that dominated the early 1970s for the artists who recorded at the Sigma Sound Studios, including the O ' Jays, the Spinners, the Bluenotes, The Delfonics, Blue Magic, The Intruders, Three Degrees, Jerry Butler, and Teddy Pendergrass.

After signing to Avco, the record label approached producer Thom Bell, who had already produced a catalogue of hits for The Delfonics, to work with the group.

James also played with The Delfonics and Blue Magic, and managed the group Slick.

The Delfonics and Bell had to work with a basic budget on the first creation as Thom explained " When I took them into the studio we didn't have any money to pay for string players and an orchestra so I played most of the instruments myself!

Among the Delfonics ' popular hits were the Grammy-winning " Didn't I ( Blow Your Mind This Time )", "( For The Love ) I Gave To You ", " Ready or Not Here I Come ( Can't Hide from Love )", and " Hey Love ".

Their smooth harmonies and choreographed stage show were inspired Motown vocal groups of the 1960s, with Shaw listing The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Impressions, and The Delfonics as influences as well as Jamaican rocksteady artists such as John Holt and Ken Boothe.

For the next set of studio sessions, Weather Report added a new Brazilian percussionist ( Alyrio Lima ) and a new drummer-Chuck Bazemore of The Delfonics.
