This version of the screwdriver also appears, although never officially announced, to have a flashlight setting, as the Doctor is seen to have it emitting a continuous glow while not uttering the classic sonic noise.

* Helen appears in various versions of the Faust myth, such as Marlowe's play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus-of which Faustus ' summoning Helen and courting her is one of the most well-known scenes, and which contributed the line " Was this the face that launched a thousand ships ...?

In " World War Three ", the Doctor is able to shake off an electrocution attempt which is fatal to a number of humans, and appears unaffected by the energy whip wielded by the Sycorax in " The Christmas Invasion ".

* In " The Deadly Assassin ", Announcer Runcible, an old classmate, recognises the Fourth Doctor despite his changes in appearance and mentions that the Doctor appears to have had a " face lift " since they last met.

The Doctor in this circumstance appears to only be referring to recognition of the individual as a Time Lord, not necessarily the specific identity.

* Cardinal Zero from the single episode audio story Circular Time: Spring – a similarly titled Time Lord ( Zeuro ) appears in the Doctor Who Unbound audio A Storm of Angels ( although it is not established whether these are meant to be alternate versions of the same person )

Romana II also appears with Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor in the 2003 remake of Shada, an audio play produced by Big Finish for the BBC's Doctor Who website and accompanied by Macromedia Flash animations, and also in Neverland and Zagreus.

He also appears, played by Marcus Hutton, in the Doctor Who audio drama The Church and the Crown, in which he leads an aborted English invasion of France in 1626.

A space pirate named Captain Cornelius ( who like Jerry is associated with the commedia dell ' arte character Pierrot ) appears in Moorcock's Doctor Who novel, The Coming of the Terraphiles.

When Izzy first met the Doctor, she and Max had stolen an artifact that was being sought by the Doctor's old enemy, the Celestial Toymaker.

The Doctor arrived in the midst of this, rescued his friends, defeated the Toymaker once again and took Izzy on board the TARDIS as his newest companion.

The Celestial Toymaker is the sixth serial of the third season in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts from 2 April to 23 April 1966.

The Doctor and the Toymaker have faced each other before, and the Toymaker abducts his old adversary to another place.

The game is advanced automatically to a further stage, with the Toymaker warning the Doctor that both parties must finish their tasks at the same time to win the game.

With the Doctor making good progress with the Trilogic Game, the Toymaker now chooses Cyril the schoolboy to take on his companions.

In the Toymaker ’ s study at the same time, the Doctor is at the final stage of the Trilogic Game.

The three friends are now reunited, with Steven and Dodo sent into the TARDIS for safety while the Toymaker challenges the Doctor to complete the Game.

The Doctor realises that when he makes the move and the Game is won, the Toymaker ’ s domain will disappear – and the TARDIS with it.

* The character of the Toymaker was to return in Season 23 in a story titled The Nightmare Fair with the Sixth Doctor & Peri Brown.

* The character of the Toymaker also appeared in the BBC Books Fifth Doctor Past Doctor Adventures novel Divided Loyalties by Gary Russell ( which reveals that the Celestial Toymaker is of the Guardian alien race, as well as revealing the details of the First Doctor's original encounter with the Toymaker while he was still at the Academy ).

The Toymaker also appears in two original Big Finish audio plays: with the Seventh Doctor in The Magic Mousetrap and with companion Charlotte Pollard in Solitaire.
