After Margaret's death Francis I of France, a nephew of the Dukes of Savoy, claimed the Duchy for himself and conquers it in 1536.

In the 14th century, when the Strand was paved as far as the Savoy, it was the vast riverside London residence of John of Gaunt, a younger son of King Edward III who had inherited by marriage the title and lands of the Dukes of Lancaster.

Some of these were Irish families who had chosen to conform to the established Church of Ireland in order to keep their lands and privileges, such as the Dukes of Leinster ( whose surname is FitzGerald, and who descend from the Old English aristocracy ), or the Gaelic Guinness family.
