His earliest notice is in Paul's Epistle to Philemon, verse 24.

" follow your bishop, as Jesus Christ followed the Father, and the presbytery as the Apostles ; and to the deacons pay respect, as to God's commandment " — Epistle of Ignatius to the Smyrnans 8: 1.

" He that honoureth the bishop is honoured of God ; he that doeth aught without the knowledge of the bishop rendereth service to the devil " — Epistle of Ignatius to the Smyrnans 9: 1.

With two exceptions, some words and phrases which had become archaic were modernized ; secondly, the readings for the Epistle and Gospel at the Holy Communion, which had been set out in full since 1549, were now set to the text of the 1611 Authorized Version of the Bible.

Paul contrasted Isaac, symbolizing Christian liberty, with the rejected older son Ishmael, symbolizing slavery ; Hagar is associated with the Sinai covenant, while Sarah is associated with the covenant of grace, into which her son Isaac enters. The Epistle of James chapter 2, verses 21-24 states that the sacrifice of Isaac shows that justification ( in the Johannine sense ) requires both faith and works.

The " liberal arts " or " liberal pursuits " ( Latin liberalia studia ) were already so called in formal education during the Roman Empire ; for example, Seneca the Younger discusses liberal arts in education from a critical Stoic point of view in Moral Epistle 88.

The New Testament Epistle to the Hebrews draws a distinction between the Jewish priesthood and the high priesthood of Christ ; it teaches that the sacrificial atonement by Jesus Christ on Calvary has made the Jewish priesthood and its prescribed ritual sacrifices redundant, along with the rest of the ceremonial acts of the Mosaic law.

Similar counsel is repeated in the first chapter of the Epistle of Titus ; however, the redactor of 1 Corinthians ( chapter 7, verse 2 ) writes, " Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

This Epistle is the shortest book in the Bible ( fewest words ; 2 John has fewer verses ).

After his commentaries ( on Romans, the Gospel of John, the Sermon on the Mount and the Epistle to the Hebrews ) and several volumes of sermons, his best-known books are Stunden christlicher Andacht ( 1839 ; 8th ed., 1870 ), intended to take the place of J H D Zschokke's standard rationalistic work with the same title, and his reply to David Strauss's Life of Jesus ( Glaubwürdigkeit der evangelischen Geschichte, 1837 ).
