On the Externsteine Descent from the Cross relief, the bent structure in the right centre is popularly identified as Irminsul. Though this may be correct, it is not supported by any contemporary sources.

In 1200 BC, the Wotanists succeeded in destroying the Irminic religious center at Goslar, following which the Irminists erected a new temple at the Externsteine, which was in turn appropriated by the Wotanists in AD 460.

In 1933 Wilhelm Teudt joined the Nazi Party and proposed to turn the Externsteine into a " sacred grove " for the commemoration of the ancestors.

Certainly, the Eresburg was only about 45 kilometers ( c. 28 miles ) from the Externsteine, and there indeed was an Irminsul " near the Externsteine ", but extensive archaeological studies of the Externsteine have failed to yield any material evidence for their use as a sacred site between Mesolithic and pre-Christian times.

The Externsteine are a distinctive rock formation located in Ostwestfalen-Lippe of northwestern Germany, not far from the city of Detmold at Horn-Bad Meinberg.

The Externsteine belong to the Teutoburger Wald and are a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is high and form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks.

Some Neo-Pagans continue to believe that the Irminsul was located at the Externsteine and identify a bent tree depicted beneath the cross in a 12th century Christian carving with it.

As early as 1926, the Externsteine was known as ‘ one of the oldest and most important nature reserves in Lippe ’ and was placed under protection.

Today, between a half to one million people annually visit the stones, making the Externsteine one the most frequently visited nature reserves in Westphalia.

Some of the Externsteine rocks can easily accessed and climbed.

Hikers reach the Externsteine from the north, on the Hermannsweg and coming from the south via the Eggeweg, which is part of the E1 European long distance path.

According to one particularly well-known suggestion, an Irminsul was situated at or near the Externsteine, a famous rock formation near Detmold, Germany.

A Christian relief on the Externsteine ( see photo above ) depicts what has been described as a bent tree-like design at the feet of Nicodemus.

In 1934 to 1935, the Ahnenerbe undertook extensive fieldwork in an attempt to uncover material evidence of the use of the Externsteine as a place of Germanic paganism worship, yet no such evidence was found.

Today it is generally accepted by historians that there is no historic attestation connecting the design in the Externsteine relief to the Irminsul.

The early 1960s and 1970s ( up until his death in 1976 ) were marked by key works in Helsinki, in particular the huge town plan for the void in centre of Helsinki adjacent to Töölö Bay and the vast railway yards, and marked on the edges by significant buildings such as the National Museum and the main railway station, both by Eliel Saarinen.
