October 2006 saw the opening of the town's first dedicated Municipal Art Gallery and visual arts centre, the Highlanes Gallery, housed in the former Franciscan Friary on St. Laurence Street.

William Briwere also went on to found the Franciscan Bridgwater Friary in the town.

* Bonamargy Friary is off the Cushendall Road on the approach to Ballycastle and is a late Franciscan foundation established in 1485 by Rory MacQuillan.

Robert Riabhach (' Grizzled ') Duncanson, 4th Chief of Clann Dhonnchaidh, was a strong supporter of King James I ( 1406 – 1437 ) and was incensed by his murder at the Blackfriars Dominican Friary in Perth.

Sligo Abbey (), a ruined abbey in Sligo, Ireland, ( officially called the Dominican Friary of Sligo ) was originally built in 1253 by the order of Maurice Fitzgerald, Baron of Offaly.

His tomb can be found at Kilcrea Friary with the epitaph ( probably composed by his widow ): " Lo Arthur Leary, generous, handsome, brave, / Slain in his bloom lies in this humble grave.

This building was later replaced by a William Adam designed building in the mid-18th century, however this, together with the Friary remains, were demolished entirely for the construction of the present building between 1835 and 1906.

The site is now occupied by the ruins of a later Franciscan Kilcrea Friary.

All factory-built PAs were 4-door saloons: the estate cars were converted by Friary of Basingstoke, Hampshire, and are rare cars today.

The village of Freshford includes the smaller hamlets of Friary, Sharpstone, Park Corner, Woodside and Staples Hill, which are separated from the village centre by a few hundred metres of open fields.
