GÉANT is the pan-European data network for the research and education community.

Co-funded by the European Union and Europe ’ s NRENs, the GÉANT network has been built and is operated by DANTE, on behalf of the European NRENs.

As well as providing the high-bandwidth links across Europe, the GÉANT network also acts as a testbed for new technology.

GÉANT, the pan-European academic and research network, was put into service on 1 December 2001, and CARNet, among others, connected to it.

In the framework of the Giga CARNet project, in February 2004 CARNet was enabled, through the connection to the GÉANT network, to have a twice-faster connection to similar academic and research networks in Europe and all over the world ( at the speed of 1. 2 Gbit / s instead of the former 622 Mbit / s ).

As a necessary requirement for further cooperation between CARNet and the world's academic and research communities, in June 2007 the speed of CARNet's connection towards the GÉANT network was increased to 10 Gbit / s.

The CARNet network established this connection through the GÉANT pan-European research network, with the current connection speed of 10 Gbit / s.

It has connections to various commercial networks, national research and education networks ( CESNET, DFN, SANET, URAN ), and is well integrated with the GÉANT network.

Through links to research networks in other regions ( such as Internet2 and ESnet in the USA, TEIN in Asia-Pacific and RedCLARA in Latin America ), GÉANT allows collaboration between researchers on a global scale, reaching over 60 NRENs outside of Europe.

These aim to make it simple and seamless for researchers to use GÉANT to work together, wherever they are located.

Together with European NRENs, GÉANT securely connects 40 million users in over 8, 000 institutions in 40 countries.

The current GÉANT project ( GN3 ) began on 1 April 2009 and is scheduled to run for four years.

According to the GÉANT website its core objective is to deliver real value and benefit to society by enabling research communities across Europe, and the world, to transform the way they collaborate on ground-breaking research.

GÉANT has been running native IPv6 since 2002 and multicast IPv6 since 2004.
