The first recorded example of written Castilian / Spanish is the Glosas Emilianenses, a document from the eleventh century.

The Glosas Emilianenses are gloss es added to this Latin codex that are considered the oldest surviving phrases written in the Castilian language.

Diego Ortiz published Trattado de Glosas ( Rome, 1553 ), an important book of music for the viol with both examples of ornamentation and pieces called Recercadas.
