The idea that the Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic languages are closely related to each other was allegedly first published in 1730 by Philip Johan von Strahlenberg, a Swedish officer who traveled in the eastern Russian Empire while a prisoner of war after the Great Northern War.

The Soo Locks ( sometimes spelled Sault Locks, but pronounced " soo ") are a set of parallel locks which enable ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes.

Competition by other, larger railroads for control of the Great Lakes area attracted a bidding war for purchase of the railroad in 1984, with the C & NW and the Soo bidding up the prices.

Upon the failure of a merger opportunity with the Soo Line Railroad in 1963, the board of the Great Western grew increasingly anxious about its continued viability in a consolidating railroad market.

The battle between James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway and Edward Pennington's ' Soo Line Railroad ' to control access across northern North Dakota resulted in nearly 500 miles of new track and more than 50 new town sites in one year.

Along the way, the line connected the Soo Line with the Milwaukee Road, the Omaha Road, the Chicago Great Western and the Rock Island ’ s St. Paul to Kansas City “ Spine Line ”.

Grand Central Station was eventually purchased by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which used the station as the Chicago terminus for its passenger rail service, including its glamorous Capitol Limited to Washington, D. C. Major tenant railroads included the Soo Line Railroad, successor to the Wisconsin Central, the Chicago Great Western Railway, and the Pere Marquette Railway.

As for the other tenants, the Soo Line Railroad ( which purchased the WC in 1909 ), the M & NW ( which became known as the Chicago Great Western Railway in 1893 ), and the Pere Marquette Railway ( which was merged into the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1947 ), none were anywhere near as serious players in the intercity passenger rail market as the B & O.

Marie Railway (“ Soo Line ”) ( which had leased the Wisconsin Central in 1909 ) and the Chicago Great Western Railway access to Grand Central Station.

The London Docklands Development Corporation ( LDDC ), needing to provide public transport cheaply for the former docks area to stimulate regeneration, considered several proposals and chose a light rail scheme using dock railway infrastructure to link the West India Docks to Tower Hill and to run alongside the Great Eastern line out of London to a northern terminus at, where a disused bay platform at the west of the station was available, for interchange with the Central Line and main lines.

The raids of Crimeans, however, didn't cease until the late 17th century, though the construction of new fortification lines across Southern Russia, such as the Great Abatis Line, constantly narrowed the area accessible to incursions.

In 1991, Turner Broadcasting System bought animation studio Hanna-Barbera Productions, and much of the back catalog of both Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears Productions from Great American Broadcasting, and three years later, Turner bought New Line Cinema and Castle Rock Entertainment.

The Great Western Main Line runs from London to Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance in the far west of Cornwall.

After acquiring the Great Northern & City Railway ( GN & C ) in 1913 ( the current Northern City Line ), the Metropolitan Railway made plans to join the GN & C to the Waterloo & City or to the Circle Line, but these never came to fruition.

These include Great Stirrup Cay, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, Little Stirrup Cay otherwise known as Royal Caribbean International's " Coco Cay ", Carnival Corporation's Little San Salvador Island or " Half Moon Cay ", and Castaway Cay, of Disney Cruise Line.

Pineola, Florida was the site of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad's " Great Train Wreck of 18 October 1956.

He is portrayed by Charles Cyphers in the 1979 film Elvis, Trey Wilson in the 1989 film Great Balls of Fire !, Dallas Roberts in the 2005 film Walk the Line and by Tim Guinee in the 2005 CBS miniseries Elvis.

Between 1 March 1883 and 30 September 1885 the line also served stations from Ealing Broadway to Windsor, running on the Great Western Main Line.

After the UERL and the Metropolitan Railway ( MR ) were brought under public control in the form of the London Passenger Transport Board ( LPTB ) in 1933, the MR's subsidiary, the Great Northern & City Railway, which ran from Moorgate to Finsbury Park, became part of the Underground as the Northern City Line.

In 1921 they bought the first piece of an eventual site, due to its location close to good transport links from both the Grand Union Canal and the Great Western Railway's Great Western Main Line, and the West Coast Main Line and onwards to the Midlands at Willesden Junction.

The Great Eastern Main Line passes through the area, the M25 motorway forms the easterly boundary and the A12 and A127 roads form the North-West and South-West borders respectively.

It originally continued west to Edgware and east to the Great Northern main line at Finsbury Park station, following the present Northern Line route as far as Highgate.

Southall is served by Southall railway station on the Great Western Main Line, providing links to Heathrow Airport, Reading and Oxford as well as London Paddington.

Stratford Regional is located on the National Rail Great Eastern Main Line, North London Line as well as the Lea Valley Lines.
