It incorporates the oldest section of underground railway in the world, which opened in 1863 and now forms part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines ; and the first line to operate electric trains, in 1890, now part of the Northern line.

Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham will merge their education services, including school admissions and transport by 2011.

In October 2010 Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea announced plans to merge all their services to create a " super-council ".

In 1919 an alternative route was published, building a tunnelled link to the disused London and South Western Railway ( L & SWR ) tracks south of the L & SWR's Shepherd's Bush station then via Hammersmith ( Grove Road ) railway station and Turnham Green.

Although authorisation was granted in 1920, the connection was never realised, and the L & SWR tracks were used by the Piccadilly line when it was extended west of Hammersmith in 1932.

The line currently runs from in the City of London to in Buckinghamshire, with branch lines to, and, although before 1988 the Hammersmith & City line and the East London line were also branded as the Metropolitan line.

In 1988, the Hammersmith & City and East London lines were rebranded as separate lines.

It is now part of the " Sub-Surface Railways " group, managed along with the Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines by London Underground Limited, formerly the Metronet consortium.

The route through central London is via St Pancras International for connections to Eurostar and the East Midlands ; Farringdon, for London Underground's Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines, and Crossrail from 2018 ; City Thameslink, which replaced the demolished Holborn Viaduct station and also has a southern entrance serving Ludgate Circus ; Blackfriars, for other rail services and the Underground District and Circle lines ; and London Bridge, for links to a number of other lines.

Most of the route and all of the stations are shared by the District, Hammersmith & City and / or Metropolitan lines.

The extension was announced in March 2009 and introduced on 13 December 2009, when the Circle was extended from Edgware Road to Hammersmith, sharing tracks with the Hammersmith & City line.

At the same time the day-time service interval on both the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines was increased from 8. 5 to 10 minutes, between them providing a train every five minutes between Hammersmith and Liverpool Street.

It now shares the tracks previously used only by the Hammersmith & City line, although movements were regularly made over this section to and from Hammersmith depot as the two lines already shared a common fleet of trains.

The extension was intended to reduce overcrowding on Hammersmith & City line trains between Hammersmith and Edgware Road by improving the frequency of trains on that section.

It was also designed to bring about improved reliability, not only for the Circle line but also for the District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, by slightly reducing the number of trains on the loop.

The latter two operated what are now the Metropolitan, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines of the London Underground.

On 6 October through services started from Hammersmith ( Hammersmith & City ) to New Cross ( SER ) and from ( MDR ) to New Cross ( LB & SCR ).

The Hammersmith & City line is part of the London Underground, coloured salmon pink on the Tube map.

The original Hammersmith & City line opened on 13 June 1864, although Hammersmith station itself moved to a different location in 1868.

Since December 2009 the route between Hammersmith and Edgware Road has been served also by Circle line trains, meaning the Hammersmith & City line no longer has any stations unique to it.

In December 2009 the Circle line extension extended the route from Edgware Road to Hammersmith.

Out of the 29 stations served, 10 have separate Hammersmith & City line platforms that are wholly or almost wholly below ground, all in cut-and-cover, while those at Paddington, Edgware Road, Farringdon, Barbican and Whitechapel are in cuttings, or under train-sheds but below street level.

Between Hammersmith and a point between Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park stations, the line is an elevated railway built on brick viaducts.

This site is currently being managed by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in collaboration with Groundwork UK.
