The Duke's sister, Lady Grace Holles ( d. 1700 ), married Thomas Pelham, 1st Baron Pelham ( see the Earl of Chichester for earlier history of the Pelham family ).

He married as his second wife Lady Grace Holles, daughter of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare ( see the Earl of Clare for more information on this family ).

Holles ) has been generally connected with him, but in the Dictionary of National Biography, Sir Clements R. Markham, a descendant from the same family, refers it to another contemporary of the same name, whose monument is still to be seen in Laneham church.

It contains both the grave of Mark Lemon ( the first editor of Punch ), and the Denzil Holles family vault.

Clumber, mentioned in Domesday Book was monastic property in the Middle Ages, but later came into the hands of the Holles family.

Pym, John Hampden and Denzil Holles were the leading members of the committee from the Commons.

He opposed Charles I from the start, and took a leading part in the disorderly scene of 2 March 1629, when the speaker, Sir John Finch, was held down in the chair after refusing to put the resolution of Sir John Eliot against arbitrary taxation and innovations in religion ( see Denzil Holles ).

But Holles, declaring that he could not render the king or his country better service, put the Protestations to the House from memory, all the members rising to their feet and applauding.

Notwithstanding his activity in the field for the cause of the parliament, the appeal to arms had been distasteful to Holles from the first.

On 7 January 1676 Holles with Halifax was summarily dismissed from the council.

Holles was essentially an aristocrat and a Whig in feeling, making Cromwell's supposed hatred of " Lords " a special charge against him ; regarding the civil wars rather as a social than as a political revolution, and attributing all the evils of his time to the transference of political power from the governing families to the " meanest of men.

The station was to be the southern terminus of an underground railway line planned to run from Wood Green station ( now Alexandra Palace ) via Finsbury Park and King's Cross and was originally to be located at the corner of Stanhope Street and Holles Street, north of the Strand.

The Holles / Clare estates, meanwhile, together with his Newcastle dukedom, were inherited by Lord Lincoln, from whom the Duke had by then become estranged.

Because of his Non-conformist views he was ejected from his living at the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, going on to become a private chaplain to Denzil Holles and John Maynard, both veteran Parliamentarians.

It had passed from Margaret Holles, née Cavendish, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle, to her daughter Henrietta Cavendish Harley.

A new Sixth Form drama The Dating Game, including a number of girls from Lady Eleanor Holles School, was shortlisted for the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough in 2006 and was taken to the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, to highly positive reviews.

The school was established in 1711, when a trust for its endowment as a Christian foundation was created under the will of Lady Eleanor Holles, daughter of John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare, which prescribed that money from her estate should be used to set up a school " to produce young women of grace and integrity ".

The battle, the fiercest in De Ruyter's memory, claimed the lives of Holmes's friends Holles and Sandwich, and forced the Lord High Admiral to transfer his flag twice, from Prince to Holmes's St Michael and from that to London.

The King believed that Puritans ( or Dissenters ) encouraged by five vociferous members of the House of Commons, John Pym, John Hampden, Denzil Holles, Sir Arthur Haselrig and William Strode along with Viscount Mandeville ( the future Earl of Manchester ) who sat in the House of Lords, had encouraged the Scots to invade England in the recent Bishops ' Wars and that they were intent on turning the London mob against him.

By his first wife he had ten children, of whom one son, Henry, survived him and became 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, dying in 1691 without surviving male issue ; the title then became extinct and the estates passed to his third daughter Margaret, wife of John Holles, Earl of Clare, created Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1694.

Holles was the third son of John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare ( c. 1564 – 1637 ), by Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Stanhope.

In 1624 Holles was returned as Member of Parliament for Mitchell in Cornwall, replacing his brother John who chose to sit for another constituency.

On 2 March 1629, when Sir John Finch, the speaker, refused to put Sir John Eliot's Protestations and was about to adjourn the House by the king's command, Holles together with another member, Sir Walter Long, thrust him back into the chair and swore " he should sit still till it pleased them to rise.

Among the papers of the secretary Sir John Coke is a petition of Holles, couched in humble and submissive terms, to be restored to the king's favour ; having given the security demanded for his good behaviour, he was liberated early in 1630, and on 30 October was allowed bail.

The peerage became extinct in the person of his grandson Denzil Holles, 3rd Baron Holles, in c. 1692, the estates devolving on John Holles ( 1662 – 1711 ), 4th Earl of Clare and Duke of Newcastle.

John Hutchins claimed he was told that the Cerne Abbas giant was cut by Holles, who owned the farm.

Pelham, Newcastle's younger brother, was a younger son of the 1st Baron Pelham of Laughton and his wife, the former Lady Grace Holles, daughter of Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare and Grace Pierrepont.

Denzil Holles, 1st Baron Holles PC ( 31 October 1599 – 17 February 1680 ) was an English statesman and writer, best known as one of the five members of parliament whom King Charles I of England attempted to arrest in 1642.
