The process of finding qualified individuals begins with submissions from the public to the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat, which consists of the Chief Justice of Ontario ( who serves as the chairperson ), the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Secretary of the Cabinet, and up to six members of the Order of Ontario.

Posthumous nominations are not accepted, though an individual who dies after his or her name was submitted to the Honours and Awards Secretariat can still be retroactively made a Member of the Order of Ontario.

By convention, a departing Prime Minister is allowed to nominate Prime Minister's Resignation Honours, to reward political and personal service.

Paisley was made a life peer in the Dissolution Honours List of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, ennobled on 18 June 2010 as Baron Bannside, of North Antrim in the County of Antrim.

In the New Year's Honours of 1941, Hughes was named a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour ( CH ), in recognition of his service as Prime Minister 1915-23.

In 2000, Prime Minister Helen Clark announced that no further awards of knighthoods and damehoods would be made in the New Zealand Honours system.

The change came about after the Prime Minister's Honours Advisory Committee ( 1995 ) was created " to consider and present options and suggestions on the structure of a New Zealand Royal Honours System in New Zealand, which is designed to recognise meritorious service, gallantry and bravery and long service "

A change to non-titular honours was a recommendation contained within the original report of the 1995 honours committee ( The New Zealand Royal Honours System: The Report of the Prime Minister ’ s Honours Advisory Committee ) which prompted the creation of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

This created additional ill feeling among other members of the Cabinet ; two more were elevated in the 1947 New Year's Honours, after which the Prime Minister refused to consider any more.

Lord Goodlad was Member of Parliament successively for Northwich ( 1974 – 83 ) and Eddisbury ( 1983 – 99 ), Goodlad also served as a junior Foreign Office Minister then as Prime Minister John Major's Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury and Chief Whip for which in the 1997 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George ( KCMG ).

The New Year Honours List, the Queen's Birthday Honours List ( to mark the Sovereign's official birthday, the second Saturday in June ), the Dissolution Honours List ( to mark the dissolution of Parliament ) and the Resignation Honours List ( to mark the end of a Prime Minister's tenure ) are all used to announce life peerage creations.
