He is perhaps most famous for his spy novel The IPCRESS File, which was made into a film starring Michael Caine.

At least one of the strips is pinned up in Deighton's spy hero's kitchen in the 1965 film of his novel The IPCRESS File.

Len Deighton introduced the lead character in The IPCRESS File, his first novel, published in November 1962.

Despite this, and despite the lead protagonist being unnamed, all six books have been unofficially called the Harry Palmer novels, based on the protagonist's name given in the subsequent film adaptations of The IPCRESS File and its sequels.

Evidence for this narrator being different from the earlier novels come from Deighton himself, who is quoted as saying that the narrator of Spy Story is not the same character as the narrator of The IPCRESS File ; in fact, for most of Spy Story, the narrator is named and addressed as " Patrick Armstrong "-although, as another character says, " We have so many different names.

Additionally, he is reported to be in his late 30s, whereas the narrator of The IPCRESS File was born in 1922 or 1923 ( making him in his 50s ), and thus implying that this protagonist is different from that of the earlier novels.

Saltzman instead decided to use The IPCRESS File and its sequels as the beginning of a new secret agent movie series.

Unlike the Bond films, The IPCRESS File was designed to have a different, more down-beat style, although Saltzman employed many Bond movie staff, including production designer Ken Adam, editor Peter Hunt, and composer John Barry.

After the release of The IPCRESS File in 1965, Saltzman's production company made Funeral in Berlin ( 1966 ) and Billion Dollar Brain ( 1967 ), both starring Michael Caine.

The ODESSA and its activities form the background of Forsyth's subsequent novel, The Odessa File ( 1972 ).

In Forsyth's second full-length novel, The Odessa File ( 1972 ), a reporter attempts to track down a certain ex-Nazi SS officer in modern Germany.

Also a subtle twist at the end of the novel can reveal that a lot more was going on than the reader initially suspected: Cat Shannon, the central figure of The Dogs of War, turns out to have had his own agenda all the time ; Adam Munro of The Devil's Alternative finds out that he was not a player but a pawn to people in high places ; in The Odessa File, the reporter's true motivation is revealed at the end, and a number of events in Icon turn out to have been committed by people other than those who the reader had been led to suppose.

It also forms part of the backstory for the forger in the 1972 Frederick Forsyth novel, The Odessa File.

Years after the series ended, Savalas reprised the role in two TV movies, The Belarus File ( 1985 ), an adaptation of the John Loftus book The Belarus Secret, and The Price of Justice ( 1987 ), based on Dorothy Uhnak's novel, The Investigation.

The scene is replicated in Callan creator James Mitchell's 1969 novel ' Red File for Callan.
