* July 12 – The Phelps Dodge Corporation deports over 1, 000 suspected IWW members from Bisbee, Arizona.

* November 11 – The Centralia Massacre in Centralia, Washington results in the deaths of four members of the American Legion, and the lynching of a local leader of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ).

IWW members played a role in the 1934 San Francisco general strike and the other organizing efforts by rank-and-filers within the International Longshoremen's Association up and down the West Coast.

Many IWW members opposed United States participation in World War I.

A statement was issued that denounced the war, but IWW members were advised to channel their opposition through the legal mechanisms of conscription.

In 1917, during an incident known as the Tulsa Outrage, a group of black-robed Knights of Liberty, a short-lived faction of the Ku Klux Klan, tarred and feathered seventeen members of the IWW in Oklahoma.

Members of the IWW were prosecuted under various State and federal laws and the 1920 Palmer Raids singled out the foreign-born members of the organization.

In 1949, Tom C. Clark placed the IWW on the Attorney General's List of Subversive Organizations in the category of " organizations seeking to change the government by unconstitutional means " under Executive Order 9835 ( revoked in 1953 ), which offers no means of appeal, and which excludes all IWW members from Federal employment and even federally subsidized housing.

The 1960s Civil Rights Movement, anti-war protests, and various university student movements brought new life to the IWW, albeit with many fewer new members than the great organizing drives of the early part of the 20th Century.

IWW members have been active in the building trades, marine transport, ship yards, high tech industries, hotels and restaurants, public interest organizations, schools and universities, recycling centers, railroads, bike messengers, and lumber yards.

As of 2005, the 100th anniversary of its founding, the IWW had around 5, 000 members, compared to 13 million members in the AFL-CIO.

In very significant part this was due to the agitation of the IWW, a group which probably never had as many as 500 members in Australia at its peak.

The IWW founded the Anti-Conscription League ( ACL ) in which IWW members worked with the broader labour and peace movement, and also carried on an aggressive propaganda campaign in its own name ; leading to the imprisonment of Tom Barker ( 1887 – 1970 ) the editor of the IWW paper Direct Action, sentenced to twelve months in March 1916.

Eighty six IWW members immediately defied the law and were sentenced to six months imprisonment, this was certainly a high percentage of the Australian IWW's active membership but it is not known how high.

During the war over 100 IWW members Australia-wide were sentenced to imprisonment on political charges, including the veteran activist and icon of the labour, socialist and anarchist movements Monty Miller.

In 1939 the Australian IWW had four members, according to surveillance by government authorities, and these members were consistently opposed to the Second World War.

Allen's group soon disappeared, but the first IWW group in Britain was founded by members of the Industrial Syndicalist Education League around Guy Bowman in 1913.

More recently, IWW members were involved in the Liverpool dockers ' strike that took place between 1995 and 1998, and numerous other events and struggles throughout the 1990s and 2000s ( decade ), including the successful unionising of several workplaces, such as support workers for the Scottish Socialist Party.

" In particular, the IWW was organized because of the belief among many unionists, socialists, anarchists and radicals that the AFL not only had failed to effectively organize the U. S. working class, as only about 5 % of all workers belonged to unions in 1905, but also was organizing according to narrow craft principles which divided groups of workers.

The IWW also had a presence among waterfront workers in Boston, New York City, New Orleans, Houston, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Eureka, Portland, Tacoma, Seattle, Vancouver as well as in ports in the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and other nations.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the IWW had various small organizing drives.

By the 1930s the IWW in Australia had declined significantly, and took part in unemployed workers movements which were led largely by the CPA.

A Neath Wobbly who had been IWW active in Mexico trained volunteers who went to the International Brigade to fight against Franco but did not return.

During the decade after World War II, the IWW had two active branches in London and Glasgow.

Some members of the IWW had relatively close links with the Socialist Party of Canada.

In the 1960s, the American folk music revival in the United States brought a renewed interest in the songs of Joe Hill and other Wobblies, and seminal folk revival figures such as Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie had a pro-Wobbly tone, while some were members of the IWW.

In 1906, when Haywood had been on trial for his life in Idaho, Debs had described him as " the Lincoln of Labor " and called for Haywood to run against Theodore Roosevelt for president of the United States., but times had changed and Debs, facing a split in the Party, chose to echo Hillquit's words, accusing the IWW of representing anarchy.

Both Centralia and the neighboring town of Chehalis had a large number of World War I veterans, with robust chapters of the Legion, as well as a large number of IWW members, some also war veterans.

It is around this time in Spokane that the first of many nation-wide free speech fights conducted by the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) or " Wobblies " had begun, spread, and garnered national attention.

Orrin N. Hilton, the lawyer representing Hill during the appeal, declared: " The main thing the state had on Hill was that he was an IWW and therefore sure to be guilty.

In an article for the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Hill wrote: " Owing to the prominence of Mr Morrison, there had to be a ' goat ' and the undersigned being, as they thought, a friendless tramp, a Swede, and worst of all, an IWW, had no right to live anyway, and was therefore duly selected to be ' the goat '.

Just prior to his execution, Hill had written to Bill Haywood, an IWW leader, saying, " Goodbye Bill.

One small packet of ashes was scattered at a 1989 ceremony which unveiled a monument to six unarmed IWW coal miners buried in Lafayette, Colorado, who had been machine-gunned by Colorado state police in 1927 in the Columbine Mine Massacre.

And James P. Cannon has observed that " the CIO became possible only after and because the IWW had championed and popularized the program of industrial unionism in word and deed.

Sailors and longshoremen had a tradition of radical politics and more or less spontaneous job actions ; the IWW had been particularly active in both east and west coast ports up through the 1920s.

Throughout its history, the reformist section of syndicalism has been overshadowed by its revolutionary section, typified by the Confédération Générale du Travail ( CGT ) in France, IWW, the Federación Anarquista Ibérica section of the CNT., the Unione Sindacale Italiana and the Central Organisation of the Workers of Sweden ( SAC ).

Throughout its history, the reformist section of syndicalism has been overshadowed by its revolutionary section, typified by the IWW or the Federación Anarquista Ibérica section of the CNT.

In New York City, the IWW has been organizing immigrant foodstuffs workers since 2005.

Senator Joe McCarthy accused Edward R. Murrow of having been an IWW member.

As envisioned by the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) – which for many years prior to 1919 had been associated with the concept – One Big Union was not just the idea that all workers should be organised into one big union.

moving toward revolutionary industrial unionism, Denver's labor radicals were not building from scratch ; rather, they drew upon and elaborated ideas and strategies generated by the previous twenty years of Denver's labor history ... the labor wars of 1903-4 may have triggered the formation of the IWW, the ideological synthesis it would uphold had been worked out in the American Labor Union's leadership by the summer of 1903 ...

The Canadian OBU movement had been inspired by the IWW, and like the IWW, it favored the general strike.

Shop committees and rank and file participation which had been so important to IWW members were de-emphasized.

It began on October 6, and was influenced by the organization Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW, also known as the " Wobblies "), a militant group that had been organizing unions in the region, particularly in the northern Mesabi Iron Range.

The successful Bolshevik-led revolution of 1918 in Russia was mirrored by a wave of syndicalist successes worldwide, including the struggle of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) in the USA alongside the creation of mass anarchist unions across Latin America and huge syndicalist-led strikes in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Italy and France, where it was noted that " neutral ( economic, but not political ) syndicalism had been swept away.

When the US joined the war, in April 1917, Ralph Chaplin, the editor of the IWW's newspaper Solidarity, claimed that opposing the draft would destroy the IWW by visiting government repression upon the union the likes of which had not before been seen.

The Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) had also been organizing for five years among workers in Lawrence, but also had only a few hundred actual members.

Joseph Ettor of the IWW had been organizing in Lawrence for some time before the strike ; he and Arturo Giovannitti of the Italian Socialist Federation of the Socialist Party of America quickly assumed leadership of the strike, forming a strike committee made up of two representatives from each ethnic group in the mills, which took responsibility for all major decisions.

According to the IWW, the looters were not just local residents but included hired thugs acting under orders from the lumber companies which the union had been organizing.

Some IWW members had been involved in violent labor disputes and bomb plots against U. S. businessmen and government officials.

The philosophy of workers ' self-management has been promoted by the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) since its founding in the United States in 1905.

The IWW officially listed 5 dead with 27 wounded, although it is speculated that as many as 12 IWW members may have been killed.
