As mentioned above, the book of Jonah is not written like the other books of the prophets.

In the New Testament, Jonah is mentioned in Matthew and Luke.

Jonah is the only one of the Twelve Minor Prophets of the Hebrew Bible to be mentioned by name in the Qur ' an.

Jonah is also mentioned in a few incidents during the lifetime of Muhammad.

This is in accordance with several ancient Jewish writings about Jonah being the son of the woman from " Zarephath " ( Sarafand ) mentioned in the stories of Elijah.

The deity name " Oannes " first occurs in texts from the Library of Ashurbanipal ( more than a century after the time of Jonah ) as Uanna or Uan but is assimilated to Adapa, a deity first mentioned on fragments of tablets from the 15th or 14th century B. C.

Jonah is mentioned twice in Chapter 14 of the apocryphal Book of Tobit, the conclusion of which finds Tobit's son, Tobias, at the extreme age of one hundred and twenty seven years, rejoicing at the news of Nineveh's destruction by Nebuchadnezzar and Ahasuerus in apparent fulfillment of Jonah's prophecy against the Assyrian capital.

The anger of Jonah ( Yunus ) is also mentioned in the Quran, which led to his departure from the people of Nineveh and his eventual realization of his error and his repentance.

Returning to Heidelberg he became Privatdozent in theology in 1829, and in 1831 published his Begriff der Kritik am Alten Testamente praktisch erörtert, a study of Old Testament criticism in which he explained the critical principles of the grammatico-historical school, and his Des Propheten Jonas Orakel über Moab, an exposition of the 5th and 16th chapters of the book of Isaiah attributed by him to the prophet Jonah mentioned in 2 Kings xiv.

Lot is also mentioned alongside Ishmael, Elisha and Jonah as men whom God favored above the nations.

It mentioned that, in the 1800s, Ra's battled Jonah Hex, who also battles Ra's al Ghul's deranged son Arkady Duvall ( voiced by Malcolm McDowell ).

Some associate the country of Tarshish, as mentioned in the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, I Kings, Jonah and Romans, with a locale in southern Spain.

Jonah son of Amittai appears in 2 Kings as a prophet from Gath-hepher ( a few miles north of Nazareth ) active during the reign of Jeroboam II ( c. 786-746 BC ), where he predicts that Jeroboam will recover certain lost territories.

The World War II Honor Roll lists: one Medal of Honor recipient ( Jonah Edward Kelley, of the 311th Infantry ); nine Distinguished Service Crosses ; 599 Silver Star medals ; 3, 909 Bronze Star medals and 5, 454 Purple Hearts.

Jonah Edward " Eddie " Kelley ( April 13, 1923-January 31, 1945 ) was a United States Army soldier who received the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in World War II.

Jeroboam's reign was also the period of the prophets Hosea, Joel, Jonah and Amos, all of whom condemned the materialism and selfishness of the Israelite elite of their day: " Woe unto those who lie upon beds of ivory ... eat lambs from the flock and calves ... sing idle songs ..." The book of Kings, written a century later condemns Jeroboam for doing " evil in the eyes of the Lord ", meaning both the oppression of the poor and his continuing support of the cult centres of Dan and Bethel, in opposition to the temple in Jerusalem.

To this day, oriental churches of the Middle East commemorate the three days Jonah spent inside the fish during the Fast of Nineveh.

Noh-Tante shared Jonah's affections for a young girl named White Fawn, so he betrayed his brother during their manhood rite at the age of 16 and left Jonah for dead with their enemies the Kiowa.

In an act of desperation during the fight, Jonah pulls a knife and kills Noh-Tante.

Despite some reports to the contrary, Jonah was not killed during a gunfight, nor was he shot in the back.

As early as the 12th century, the ruins of Nineveh were correctly identified by Benjamin of Tudela ( also known as Benjamin Son of Jonah ), a rabbi from Navarre, who visited the Jews of Mosul and their ruins during his travels throughout the Middle East.
