The Kara Sea ( Russian: < font lang =" ru "> Ка ́ рское мо ́ ре </ font >, Karskoe More ) is part of the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia.

It is separated from the Barents Sea to the west by the Kara Strait and Novaya Zemlya, and the Laptev Sea to the east by the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago.

Compared to the Barents Sea, which receives relatively warm currents from the Atlantic, the Kara Sea is much colder, remaining frozen for over nine months a year.

The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the Kara Sea as follows:

The Barents Sea, White Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan are linked to Russia via the Arctic and Pacific.

The voyage was to the northeasterly direction over the Kara Sea.

Many of these carefully collected scientific data had been lost during the ill-fated journey of Peter Tessem and Paul Knutsen, two crew members sent on a mission by Amundsen, but they were later retrieved by Russian scientist Nikolay Urvantsev as they lay abandoned on the Kara Sea shores.

The Ural Mountains extend about from the Kara Sea to the Kazakh Steppe along the northern border of Kazakhstan.

The isolated population of Laptev walruses is confined year-round to the central and western regions of the Laptev Sea, the eastmost regions of the Kara Sea, and the westmost regions of the East Siberian Sea.

Novaya Zemlya separates the Kara Sea from the Barents Sea.

The name Afyon Kara Hisar ( literally opium black castle in Turkish ), since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.

Author Lin Carter later created a son for Dr. Petrie and Kara, but this is not considered canonical.

Carnarvon National Park is significant to Bidjara, Karingbal, and Kara Kara people of Central Queensland.

It has a population of 695, 300 ( 2001 census estimate ), 2009 estimates around 1 million people in Ashgabat, and is situated between the Kara Kum desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range.

The lake lies at an altitude of 420 m, is 105 km long and 22 – 48 km wide, with a maximum depth of 15 m. Its major tributaries are the Kara Irtysh ( Black Irtysh ) and Kendyrlyk from the east ; its only outlet is the Irtysh River ( or White Irtysh ).

There is Krusenstern Island in the Bering Strait, as well as a small group of islands in the Kara Sea, southwest of the Nordenskiöld Archipelago, called Krusenstern Islands.

The desert is crossed by the second largest irrigation canal in the world, the Kara Kum Canal.

The Kara field turned out to be one of the richest in Transbaikalia, at their peak delivering 1 tonne of gold yearly.
