At university Hattersley joined the Socialist Society ( SocSoc ) and was one of those responsible for changing its name to the " Labour Club " and affiliating it with the non-aligned International Union of Socialist Youth rather than the Soviet-backed International Union of Students.

The group initially decided to organise its student work through the National Organisation of Labour Students ( NOLS ), forming Socialist Students in NOLS to campaign within the National Union of Students.

In 1967 he fought over the office of vice president of the National Union of Students against Jack Straw ( later Labour Party MP and Secretary of State for Justice of the UK ).

In 1999 he was elected as Rector of the University of Glasgow as the candidate of the Glasgow University Labour Club, but resigned in 2001 after the Glasgow University Students ' Representative Council passed a motion requesting him to do so.

The Socialist Societies also elect three representatives to the National Policy Forum, currently Emma Burnell ( Labour Housing Group ), Martin Rathfelder ( Socialist Health Association ) and Helen Gibson ( Labour Students ).

Young Labour unlike Labour Students is not a Socialist Society and retains a separate place within the Labour Party.

Every year the International Labour Conference's Committee on the Application of Standards examines a number of alleged breaches of international labour standards.
