The " Covenants " part of the book, labeled " Covenants and Commandments of the Lord, to his servants of the church of the Latter Day Saints ", contained a total of 103 revelations on church governance.

In 1835, the book was printed and published under the title Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of the Latter Day Saints: Carefully Selected from the Revelations of God.

Officials of Community of Christ ( formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ) first published an edition of the Doctrine and Covenants in 1864, based on the previous 1844 edition.

A resulting schism over the legitimacy of these changes led to the formation of the Restoration Branches movement, the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The first references to the term evangelist in Latter Day Saint theology were mainly consistent with how the term is used by Protestants and Catholics.

In 1839, Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement visited Van Buren to plead for the U. S. to help roughly 20, 000 Mormon settlers of Independence, Missouri, who were forced from the state during the 1838 Mormon War there.

According to Smith, the angel was the guardian of the golden plates, which Latter Day Saints believe were the source material for the Book of Mormon, buried in a hill near Smith's home in western New York.

Joseph Smith, Jr. ( who would later become the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement ) said that on the night of September 21, 1823, Moroni appeared to Smith and told him about the Golden Plates that were buried ( in a stone box ) a few miles from Smith's home ; visited Smith various times over the course of the next six years ; and after Smith translated a portion of the writing on the plates ( either one-third or two-thirds ; accounts vary ) as the Book of Mormon, Smith turned the plates back over to Moroni.

These changes in the church's practices and beliefs were very controversial, leading to the formation of breakaway churches such as the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ; in 1994, former church historian Richard P. Howard estimated that 25, 000 members had left to join such groups.

Vigilantes in the public and private sector used force to drive individual Saints from Jackson to nearby counties within Missouri ; eventually, Latter Day Saints were given until the end of November 6, 1833 to leave the county en masse.
