It was traversed by the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway, in 1913, and presently two major cross-country freeways, I-15 and I-80, intersect in the city.

According to the Federal Highway Administration ( FHWA ), the Lincoln Tunnel XBL is the country's HOV facility with the highest number of peak hour persons among HOV facilities with utilization data available, with 23, 500 persons in the morning peak, and 62, 000 passengers during the 4-hour morning peak.

The corner of 42nd Street and Broadway, at the southeast corner of Times Square, was the eastern terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States of America, which was conceived and mapped in 1913.

The Lincoln Highway proceeded west on 42nd Street to the Weehawken Ferry.

After crossing the Hudson River to Weehawken, New Jersey, the Lincoln Highway continued across the country to its western terminus in Lincoln Park in San Francisco, California.

Due to the overlapping of auto trail designations, portions of the route had other names that remain in common use, such as the Boston Post Road between Boston and New York, the Lincoln Highway between New York and Philadelphia, Baltimore Pike between Philadelphia and Baltimore, and the Dixie Highway in and south of eastern Georgia.

The Lincoln Highway was the first road for the automobile across the United States of America.

Conceived and promoted by Indiana entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher, the Lincoln Highway spanned coast-to-coast from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco, originally through 13 states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California.

In 1915, the " Colorado Loop " was removed, and in 1928, a realignment relocated the Lincoln Highway through the northern tip of West Virginia.

The first officially recorded length of the entire Lincoln Highway in 1913 was.

Conceived in 1912 and formally dedicated October 31, 1913, the Lincoln Highway was America's first national memorial to President Abraham Lincoln, predating the 1922 dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D. C. by nine years.

As the first automobile road across America, the Lincoln Highway brought great prosperity to the hundreds of cities, towns and villages along the way.

The Lincoln Highway became affectionately known as " The Main Street Across America.

The Lincoln Highway was inspired by the Good Roads Movement.

In turn, the success of the Lincoln Highway and the resulting economic boost to the governments, businesses and citizens along its route inspired the creation of many other named long-distance roads ( known as National Auto Trails ), such as the Yellowstone Trail, National Old Trails Road, Dixie Highway, Jefferson Highway, Bankhead Highway, Jackson Highway, Meridian Highway and Victory Highway.

S. taxpayers nearly $ 200 billion in bailouts, and many people their life savings.

She was the recipient of honorary lifetime awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1981, the American Film Institute in 1987, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Golden Globes, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Screen Actors Guild.

Following the season's conclusion St. Paul, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, and Lincoln announced they were leaving the league to form a new independent league with five teams from the folded Central Baseball League in the southern United States ; the new league was to be known as the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

President Roosevelt and Walter White, then-executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and Anderson's manager, impresario Sol Hurok, persuaded Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes to arrange an open air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

All but two of Pennsylvania's Division II football programs compete in the PSAC: Lincoln competes in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association while Seton Hill University competes in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Lincoln Highway Association, originally established in 1913 to plan, promote, and sign the highway, was re-formed in 1992 and is now dedicated to promoting and preserving the road.

However, the original Lincoln Highway Association made no attempt to map a route from Times Square to the Holland Tunnel, so today, use West Side Highway ( not a part of the Lincoln Highway ) to connect from the west end of 42nd Street down to east portal of the Holland Tunnel.

On July 1, 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association ( LHA ) was established " to procure the establishment of a continuous improved highway from the Atlantic to the Pacific, open to lawful traffic of all description without toll charges.

While the Lincoln Highway Association did not have sufficient funds to sponsor large sections of the road, starting in 1914 it did sponsor " Seedling Mile " projects.

The Lincoln Highway Association was re-formed in 1992 with the mission, "... to identify, preserve, and improve access to the remaining portions of the Lincoln Highway and its associated historic sites.

In 2003 the Lincoln Highway Association sponsored the 90th Anniversary Tour of the entire road, from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco.

In 2013, the Lincoln Highway Association will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Highway by conducting an Official Lincoln Highway Centennial Tour of the road in June 2013.

The tour will have both an East Tour and a West Tour, starting simultaneously in New York and San Francisco, and meeting midpoint in Kearney, Nebraska for a celebration June 30 – July 2 at the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, in conjunction with the Lincoln Highway Association 2013 conference.

In 2012, the 24-member Lincoln Highway Association National Mapping Committee, chaired by Paul Gilger, completed the research and cartography of the entire Lincoln Highway and all its subsequent realignments ( totaling ), a project which took more than 10 years.

Franzwa served as the first president of the revitalized Lincoln Highway Association, in 1992.

When he briefly returned to the United States in 1972, the Lincoln Center Film Society honoured him with a gala and awarded him a lifetime achievement award, which has since been awarded annually to filmmakers as The Chaplin Award.

He has also been awarded the Lincoln Forum's " Richard Nelson Currant Award ", New York Civil War Round Table's " Bell I. Wiley Award ", and Florida State University's " Artes Award " as a Distinguished Alumnus.

She has also been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo ( 2001 ); Lincoln University ( Missouri ) ( 2003 ); Delaware State University ( 2004 ) and Middlebury College ( 2006 ).

Henry Lincoln Johnson, was awarded the French Croix de guerre, and has been considered for a posthumous Medal of Honor.

Apart from two small parcels awarded to the Bishop of Lincoln and Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Rector ’ s Glebe of, virtually all the land was awarded to Lord Yarborough.

He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award.

She was awarded the rank of Brevet-Major by General Garfield and commended by President Abraham Lincoln for her service to the union cause, and became known as Miss Major Cushman.

* Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass artist, is referred to by many people and refers to himself as " Doctor " after being awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, in 1976.

In 2006 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Winchester, and in 2010 an honorary doctorate by the University of Lincoln, the city where he spent his teenage years.

Taylor led Lincoln to the Fourth Division title in 1976, during which the Imps set the league records for most wins ( 32 ), fewest defeats ( 4 ), and most points ( 74 ) ( when 2 points were awarded for a win ).

He was awarded the Shaw Prize in 2012 ( along with Jane Luu of MIT Lincoln Laboratory ) for the " discovery and characterization of trans-Neptunian bodies, an archeological treasure dating back to the formation of the solar system and the long-sought source of short period comets ".
