The cause of the conflict is uncertain, as the sources are divided ; the Lombard Paul the Deacon accuses the Gepids, while the Byzantine historian Menander Protector places the blame on Alboin, an interpretation favoured by historian Walter Pohl.

The Lombard historian Paul the Deacon wrote in the Historia Langobardorum that the Lombards descended from a small tribe called the Winnili, dwelling in southern Scandinavia ( Scadanan ), who had migrated southward to seek new lands.

Ut queant laxis or Hymnus in Ioannem are verses in honour of John the Baptist written in Horatian Sapphics by Paulus Diaconus, the eighth century Lombard historian.

By his second wife, the daughter of the influential noble George Sursuvul, he had three sons: Peter, who succeeded as Emperor of Bulgaria in 927 and ruled until 969 ; Ivan, who rebelled against Peter in 928 and then fled to Byzantium ; and Benjamin ( Bajan ), who, according to Lombard historian Liutprand of Cremona, " possessed the power to transform himself suddenly into a wolf or other strange animal ".

He is called Gallicinus, or Gallicini patricii, by the Lombard historian Paul the Deacon ( Latin text, English patrician Gallicinus ).

His surname Diaconus, shows that he took orders as a deacon ; and some think he was a monk before the fall of the Lombard kingdom.

In 568, the Lombard leader Alboin invaded Italy, and founded an independent kingdom which in 774 was overthrown by Charlemagne, who was crowned Emperor of the Romans in 800.

In 560 a new, energetic king emerged: Alboin, who defeated the neighboring Gepidae, made them his subjects, and, in 566, married the daughter of their king Cunimund, Rosamund .< BR > In the spring of 568, King Alboin led the Lombard migration into Italy :< BR >

After his defeat of Ratchis, the last Lombard to rule as king was Desiderius, duke of Tuscany, who managed to take Ravenna definitively, ending the Byzantine presence in northern Italy.

He decided to reopen struggles against the Pope, who was supporting the dukes of Spoleto and Benevento against him, and entered Rome in 772, the first Lombard king to do so.
