The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace ( Palais du Louvre ) which began as a fortress built in the late 12th century under Philip II.

The building was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace.

In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leaving the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection, including, from 1692, a collection of antique sculpture.

The Louvre Palace was altered frequently throughout the Middle Ages.

By 1874, the Louvre Palace had achieved its present form of an almost rectangular structure with the Sully Wing to the east containing the square Cour Carrée and the oldest parts of the Louvre ; and two wings which wrap the Cour Napoléon, the Richelieu Wing to the north and the Denon Wing, which borders the Seine to the south.

His death rites took place at the courtyard of the Louvre Palace on September 1, 1965 under the direction of writer and thinker André Malraux, who was at the time France's Minister of Culture.

Another of the early enthusiasts of the game was King Charles V of France, who had a court set up at the Louvre Palace.

After the French Revolution, it was moved to the Louvre, but spent a brief period in the bedroom of Napoleon in the Tuileries Palace.

Prior to the auction, the L ' Enfant et l ' Art collection exhibited at Les Arts Décoratifs in the Louvre Palace.

From 1672 to 1805, the official meetings of the Académie were held at the Louvre ; since 1805, the Académie française has met at the Collège des Quatre Nations ( now known as the Palais de l ' Institut ).

In 1852, opposite the wing of the Louvre, Baron Haussmann enlarged the Place du Palais-Royal that is centered on the baroque Palais Royal, built for Cardinal Richelieu in 1624 and willed to the royal family, with its garden surrounded by chic commercial arcades.

Charles had received a collection of manuscripts from his predecessor, John II, and transferred them to the Louvre from the Palais de la Cité.

The most famous Savonnerie carpets are the series made for the Grande Galerie and the Galerie d ' Apollon in the Palais du Louvre between c. 1665-1685.

This hôtel was later demolished to make room for Cardinal Richelieu's Palais Cardinal, and a new Hôtel de Rambouillet was built in 1618 on the rue Saint-Thomas du Louvre, between the Louvre and the Tuileries.
