Arthur Heineman's Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo

The motel concept originated with the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo, originally called the Milestone Mo-Tel, which was constructed in 1925 by Arthur Heineman ( although some earlier motels that dated to 1915 have been discovered ).

A handful used novelty architecture such as wigwams or teepees or used decommissioned rail cars to create a Red Caboose Motel in which each " Caboose Motel " or " Caboose Inn " cabin is an individual rail car.

More recently, the genre has been revived with such films as Mayhem Motel ( 2001 ), Murder Inn ( 2005 ), Vacancy ( 2007 ), and its direct-to-video prequel, Vacancy 2: The First Cut ( 2009 ).

The Trader Vic's in Palo Alto even spawned architectural choices, such as the concept behind the odd looking Tiki Inn Motel, which still exists as the Stanford Terrace Inn.

Buttonwillow is also the motel hub for member of the Sports Car Club of America's Cal Club region when they hold events at Cal Club-owned Buttonwillow Raceway Park-a Super 8, a Motel 6 and the Homeland Inn are the motels of note there.

In the mid 1970s it became The Gander Inn Motel.

In 2009 the old hospital was remodeled into a Bed and Breakfast featuring a Restaurant, Lodge, Cottage and Motel rooms and operating under the name of The Gander Inn Motel-Bed & Breakfast

The city has several businesses including the Trapper's Kettle Restaurant and Motel, Dairy Queen, The Cowboy Inn, Cenex / Superpumper, Dan's Conoco Station, Daddy's Dinner, The Roughrider Bar and Steakhouse, Mike's Bar, and several others.

There are also 3 hotels in town, the Dakota Lodge, the Lemmon Country Inn, and the In Town Motel.

During a key scene in this " Romantic thriller " directed by James Nguyen, four terrified characters defend themselves against bloodthirsty hawks and vultures by waving wire hangers over their heads in the parking lot of a San Francisco Bay Area Motel 6.

Their stage productions have included The Balled Sopranos, Motel Sicks: A Dragapella Summer Vacation, Everything But the Kitsch ' n ' Synch and GreatesTits, all of which premiered at San Francisco's New Conservatory Theatre Center.
