All Vaishnava schools are panentheistic and view the universe as part of Krishna or Narayana, but see a plurality of souls and substances within Brahman.

Traditions of Gaudiya Vaishnavas, the Nimbarka Sampradaya and followers of Swaminarayan and Vallabha consider Krishna to be the source of all avatars, and the source of Vishnu himself, or to be the same as Narayana.

A different viewpoint differing from this theological concept is the concept of Krishna as an avatar of Narayana or Vishnu.

It should be however noted that although it is usual to speak of Vishnu as the source of the avataras, this is only one of the names of the God of Vaishnavism, who is also known as Narayana, Vasudeva and Krishna and behind each of those names there is a divine figure with attributed supremacy in Vaishnavism.

Upon this request it is said that Lord Krishna opens his mouth in front of Yashoda who sees the Seven Oceans, the entire Universe with its vast expanse and also Lord Narayana seated upon Adishesha ( The Divine Snake ), attended upon by his beloved consort Mahalakshmi.

Arjuna was an avatar of Nara, who along with the avatar of Narayana, Krishna, established Dharma in the Dvapara Yuga.

Krishna being Narayana of the Nara Narayana avatar, symbolizes the atman, and hence the two are inseparable.

Although it is usual to speak of Vishnu as the source of the avatars, within the Vaishnavism branch of Hinduism Narayana, Vasudeva, and Krishna are also seen as names denoting divine aspects which descend as avatars.

In the Mahabharata, Krishna is often referred to as Narayana and Arjuna as Nara.

Vedas say that devotees of Narayana, Vishnu are quite rare, and still more rare are those who are pure devotees ( of Vishnu, Narayana, Krishna ).

* In the video game Grand Theft Auto 2 from the Grand Theft Auto series, Narayana is the name of a neighbourhood occupied by the Hare Krishna street gang.

Periyalvar delighted in worshipping Vishnu as mother, and composed 440 verses treating himself as Yashoda and Narayana as Krishna.

So bhakti ( loving devotion ) goes to Bhagavan, Krishna ( the Avatar of Vishnu, Narayana ).

It also refers to a tradition devoted to worship of Krishna, later assimilated into the concept of Narayana or original form svayam bhagavan.

* Rishi Narayana — seer of the Purusha Sukta of the Rig Veda.

It is observed in the Bhagavat Mahapuran and the Rig Veda that " Narayana devam adevam isham " or, Narayana is the only lord and beyond him there is no other.

The fifth verse of the Narayana Sukta, a hymn in Yajurveda, states that Narayana pervades whatever is seen or heard in this universe from inside and outside alike.

The Narayana Upnaishad states that Narayana is the eternal being: and therefore Narayana is Brahma.

* The book, Sri Ramanuja, His Life, Religion, and Philosophy, states that the name " Narayana " means, " He who is the dwelling place i. e. the source, support and dissolving ground of all Jivas or souls, including inert matter.

According to Venerable Tripitaka Master Bhikshu Shramana Hsuan Hua's " Shurangama Mantra Commentary " ( Buddhist Text Translation Society of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, 1981, Volume 1 ), the Shurangama Mantra mystically and literally includes all of the Buddha Dharma in its entirety, and its focus is on the Five Dhyana Buddhas ( Vairochana, Amitabha ), Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, and Amoghasiddhi, with stress on Vairochana and Ashobhya Buddhas ) and their retinues of Dharmapalas and wrathful deities in male and female forms, such as Vajrapani, wrathful Manjushri, Mahakala, Tara, Pandaravasini, Prakruti, Uchushma Fire Head Vajra, Brahma, Indra, Shiva as Rudra, Raudri-Umapati form of Vajrayogini, Narayana, Ganapati, various Dhakinis, Naga kings, Yaksha kings, Rakshasha kings, and many other Dharma Protectors of the Buddhist Pantheon and Vedic pantheon.

In Srimad Bhagavata or Bhagavata Purana, Lord Narayana is oftenly termed as Hari which usually means Supreme Being who takes away all the pains and sufferings of his devotees and destroys the material bondage of living entities and gives them liberation or moksha.

In Hindu ( Vedic ) tradition, Shesha ( in IAST transliteration, Devanagari: श े ष ) or Sheshanaag ( Shesha the Naga ) ( in IAST transliteration, Devanagari: श े षन ा ग ) or Adishesha ( in IAST transliteration, Devanagari: आद ि श े ष ) is the king of all nagas, one of the primal beings of creation, and according to the Bhagavata Purana, an Avatar of the Supreme God known as Narayana.

It is sincerely believed by the Vaishnavism a sect of ancient Vedic Hindu religion, that Aadi Sesha the divine snake over which God Vishnu resides took incarnation as Lakshmana, later as the great Vaishnavaitic saint and philosopher Sri Ramanuja, later once again as Sri Manavala Mamunigal as he is the embodiment of ultimate service to lord Almighty Sriman Narayana

One of the temples built in Thrissur is the Sri Narayana Temple at Koorkenchery.

All these episodes — starting with his ' birth ' at sea as the ' son ' of Narayana, the performance of the grand Tavam, the symbolic shamanic actions of incinerating the demons, the seizing of esoteric powers, and the unifying of the deities unto himself — highlight the important message that Ayya Vaikundar came as the avatar of Narayana.

For example, the narrative on the origin of the Santror Makkal as the children of Narayana endowed the people with a divine pedigree, and it was a powerful story to drive home the message that the people were a dignified humanity.
