Although explicitly linked with modern views on the likelihood and detectability of extraterrestrial civilizations, Drake started his career undertaking radio astronomical research at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory ( NRAO ) in Green Bank, West Virginia, and later the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

In this period, Drake was a professor at Cornell University and Director of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center ( NAIC ) – the formal name for the Arecibo facility.

Drake is a member of the National Academy of Sciences where he chaired the Board of Physics and Astronomy of the National Research Council ( 1989 – 92 ).

The Kitt Peak National Observatory ( KPNO ) is a United States astronomical observatory site located on 2, 096 m ( 6, 880 ft ) Kitt Peak of the Quinlan Mountains in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O ' odham Nation, southwest of Tucson.

In 1982 NOAO was formed to consolidate the management of three optical observatories — Kitt Peak ; the National Solar Observatory facilities at Kitt Peak and Sacramento Peak, New Mexico ; and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.

The largest optical telescope in the world as of 2009 to use a non-segmented single-mirror as its primary mirror is the 8. 2 m ( 8. 7 yards ) Subaru telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, located in Mauna Kea Observatory on Hawaii since 1997 ; however, this is not the largest diameter single mirror in a telescope, the U. Following several years of work, Louis Essen from the National Physical Laboratory ( Teddington, England ) and William Markowitz from the United States Naval Observatory ( USNO ) determined the relationship between the hyperfine transition frequency of the caesium atom and the ephemeris second.

Due to a missing jet stream, fading spots, and slower activity near the poles, independent scientists of the National Solar Observatory ( NSO ) and the Air Force Research Laboratory ( AFRL ) now ( 2011 ) predict that the next 11-year solar sunspot cycle, Cycle 25, will be greatly reduced or may not happen at all.
