Alexandria is served by the Norfolk & Southern Railway with a connector which allows rail traffic to flow smoothly between lines servicing east – west and north – south destinations.

Rail service is provided by the city-owned Columbia Terminal ( COLT ) Railroad, which runs from the north side of Columbia to Centralia and a connection to the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Freight rail service in Toledo is operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway, CSX Transportation, Canadian National Railway, Ann Arbor Railroad, and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway.

All except the Wheeling have local terminals ; the Wheeling operates into Toledo from the east through trackage rights on Norfolk Southern to connect with the Ann Arbor and the CN.

Dover is located on a former Pennsylvania Railroad line, which is now served by Norfolk Southern.

Originally an agricultural market town, the construction of the Erie Railroad ( now Norfolk Southern ) in the 1840s made Binghamton the commercial and then the manufacturing hub of the Southern Tier of New York and the adjacent counties in Pennsylvania.

Apart from commercial Main Street and some industrial buildings one block north, along the Norfolk Southern tracks, the Westside is primarily a residential neighborhood.

The Northside is just north of downtown across the Norfolk Southern rail tracks.

The neighborhood stretches west from Chenango River to the Johnson City border and lies between the Norfolk Southern tracks to the south and Route 17 to the north.

The Anglo-Saxons held the present counties of Kent, Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and around the Humber ; it is clear that the native British controlled everything west of a line drawn from the mouth of the Wiltshire Avon at Christchurch north to the river Trent, then along the Trent to where it joined the Humber, then north along the river Derwent and east to the North Sea, and also controlled a salient to the north and west of London, and south of Verulamium, that stretched west to join their main territory.

Freight trains run into Delaware from Snow Hill on the Worcester Railroad, and the main line ( formerly Pennsylvania Railroad ) from Philadelphia to Cape Charles, Virginia and Norfolk runs through the southeastern corner of the county.

After the American Civil War ( 1861 – 1865 ), William Mahone, a civil engineer and hero of the Battle of the Crater, was the driving force in the linkage of 3 railroads, including the V & T, across the southern tier of Virginia to form the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad ( AM & O ), a new line extending from Norfolk to Bristol, Virginia in 1870.

Their male line ended with Roger Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk, who died without an heir in 1307, so their titles and estates reverted to the crown.

It was to be 20 more years before its bigger neighbor, the city of Norfolk, also received a rail line, in 1858, when the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad was completed.

In the 21st century, the city has access to lines of CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern and three short line railroads.

The last major line was completed in 1858 to the east, with the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad connecting to an ocean port.

Currently, a major north-south railroad line of CSX Transportation crosses with an east-west line of Norfolk Southern.

The Cross Canal, or Hamburg Ditch, three miles ( 5 km ) south of the Virginia line, was Gates County's water route to the major port of Norfolk.

A Norfolk Southern Railway line runs across the north end of the county on its route between Danville, Illinois and Lafayette ; it carries about 45 freight trains each day.

Industrial parks are located in both Montpelier and Hartford City, and both cities are served by railroad line owned by Norfolk Southern.

A Norfolk Southern Railway railroad line enters the county from the south after leaving Eaton ; it runs about a mile to the east of State Road 3 until it reaches Hartford City where it veers to the northeast and passes through Montpelier.

Norfolk Southern also owns Blackford County's east – west line located in the southern half of the county.

In October 2009, Central Railroad Company of Indianapolis pursued a leasing agreement to operate the east – west line with Norfolk Southern Railway in Blackford County.

There is commuter rail service in the planning stages along the Norfolk Southern line, with proposed stations in Forest Park, Morrow, Jonesboro, and initially ending at Lovejoy.

The North Norfolk Shoreline Management Plan introduced by the Environment Agency has proposed a number of strategies in the light of continual erosion and predicted rising sea levels caused by global warming: these include Advance the line, Hold the line, Managed retreat and Do nothing.

Beyond Sheringham station, the line has been preserved as the North Norfolk Railway also known as " The Poppy Line " to Holt.

In 1965, within a year of the closure of this line, the North Norfolk Railway was formed to restore part of the line as an independent heritage steam railway.

The Norfolk Southern railway has a main line and a spur running through Madison.
