Mach received a major boost in visibility when the Open Software Foundation ( OSF ) announced they would be hosting future versions of OSF / 1 on Mach 2. 5, and were investigating Mach 3 as well.

Digital also strongly promoted OSF / 1 for real-time applications, and with traditional UNIX implementations at the time providing poor real-time support at best, the real-time and multi-threading support was heavily dependent on the Mach kernel.
This new OS was produced in a little more than a year's time and incorporated technology from Carnegie Mellon University: the Mach 2. 5 microkernel ; from IBM, the journaled file system as well as commands and libraries ; from SecureWare secure core components ; from BSD the networking stack ; and a new virtual memory management system invented at OSF.
The effort was spearheaded by Brett Halle at Apple and development split between Michael Burg ( device drivers and distribution ) at Apple in Cupertino, California, and Nick Stephen ( Mach porting & development ) at the OSF in Grenoble, France.
In the early 1990s, several Unix R & D systems were ported to the PA-RISC platform, including several attempts of OSF / 1, various Mach ports and systems that combined parts of Mach with other systems ( MkLinux, Mach 4 / Lites ).
