Petroglyph on Ometepe at base of Maderas

The Ometepe Petroglyph Project was a volunteer field survey of the Maderas half of Ometepe from 1995 – 1999.

Of the 73 sites surveyed by the Ometepe Petroglyph Project, petroglyphs were recorded at all but one.

In addition to the remote area and poor lighting, on Ometepe Island, the depth of the engraved lines on petroglyphs thus far recorded varies from “ immeasurably shallow ” to around three centimeters ( Ometepe Petroglyph Project Website, 2006 ).

Despite draining into the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean is near enough to be seen from the mountains of Ometepe ( an island in the lake ).

Another major tourist attraction is Ometepe, a large volcanic island inhabited by about 32, 000 people ( 2005 census ).

Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua in the Republic of Nicaragua.

Today, Ometepe is developing tourism and ecotourism, with the archaeological past and the bounty of its nature sanctuary, the exotic vegetation, animal and bird life as drawcards.

Volcán Concepción ( once named Ometepe volcano ) is the northwest half of the island.

Ometepe Island is generally included within the archaeological area of “ Greater Nicoya ,” which also encompasses the Rivas area on the lake shore and descends into Costa Rican Nicoya Peninsula.

There is a classified “ Ometepe period ” ( A. D. 1350 – 1550 ) Greater Nicoyan Period, which corresponds to Mesoamerican Postclassic period.

The Ceramic Type " Ometepe Red Slipped-Incised " is found on Ometepe Island.

The Ometepe Biological Field School is situated on the Maderas side of the island.

Concepción is one of two volcanoes ( along with Maderas ) that form the island of Ometepe, which is situated in Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua, Central America.

Concepción is an active stratovolcano that forms the northwest part of the Isla de Ometepe.

With a height of 1, 394 m, Maderas is the smaller of the two volcanoes which make up the island of Ometepe, situated in Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua, Central America.

It rains often on Ometepe Island, so a slippery climb is likely.

It is the second largest city on the island of Ometepe.

Also present in Altagracia is the Museum of Ometepe ( Museo de Ometepe ) with a large archaeological and ethnographic collection.

The lake holds Ometepe and Zapatera which are both volcanic islands, as well as the archipelago of the Solentiname Islands.

Many Honduran Capuchins were captured and relocated to the island of Roatán, and many Nicaraguan Capuchins were captured and relocated to the island of Ometepe.

The Department of Rivas also includes Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua.

Ometepe has an area of 276 km².

As of June 2010, Ometepe was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Preserve.

The inhabitants of Ometepe were hard hit.

Many traditions have been kept alive, thus inhabitants of Ometepe celebrate more religious and folk festivals than anywhere else in Nicaragua.

Concepción volcano rose in the early Holocene Epoch and, through continual eruptions, now reaches an altitude of 1 610 m making Ometepe the world's highest lake island.

The volcanoes are visible from everywhere on the island, and life on Ometepe revolves closely around them.

A Petroglyph is an intaglio abstract or symbolic image engraved on natural stone by various methods, usually by prehistoric peoples.

In New Mexico there is also the Aztec Ruins National Monument, Bandelier National Monument, Capulin Volcano National Monument, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Chaco Culture National Historical Park, El Malpais National Monument, El Morro National Monument, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, Pecos National Historical Park, Petroglyph National Monument, and the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.

Suburban development is now another enemy of the Petroglyph Nation Monument site.

The Petroglyph National Monument is a major asset for the City of Albuquerque and New Mexico but its rich trove of cultural and natural resources is threatened by the inability of the City and the National Park Service ( NPS ) to cooperatively manage the two-thirds of the monument that is City-owned land, according to documents posted on June 6, 2012 by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility ( PEER ).

Due to City service cutbacks, most of the Petroglyph is left unpatrolled.

Little Petroglyph Canyon is open to the public for tours.

Star Wars: Empire at War is a 2006 real-time strategy ( RTS ) game developed by Petroglyph Games and published by LucasArts.

He discussed the possibility of a RTS video game set in the Star Wars universe, stating "... there's a bright future there for games based on these new properties as well as original Star Wars games like a new real-time strategy PC game that Petroglyph is developing for next year ".
