Epigram is associated with ' point ' because the European epigram tradition takes the Latin poet Martial as its principal model ; he copied and adapted Greek models ( particularly the contemporary poets Lucillius and Nicarchus ) selectively and in the process redefined the genre, aligning it with the indigenous Roman tradition of ' satura ', hexameter satire, as practised by ( among others ) his contemporary Juvenal.

This was accomplished by the Roman poet Virgil in the first century BCE.

Publius Vergilius Maro ( October 15, 70 BC – September 21, 19 BC ), usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period.

Sometime after the publication of the Eclogues ( probably before 37 BC ), Virgil became part of the circle of Maecenas, Octavian's capable agent d ' affaires who sought to counter sympathy for Antony among the leading families by rallying Roman literary figures to Octavian's side.

Some legends state that Virgil, fearing that he would die before he had properly revised the poem, gave instructions to friends ( including the current emperor, Augustus ) that the Aeneid should be burned upon his death, owing to its unfinished state and because he had come to dislike one of the sequences in Book VIII, in which Venus and Vulcan have sexual intercourse, for its nonconformity to Roman moral virtues.

It was an allusion to the Roman poet Virgil towards the end of the speech, which has been remembered and gave the speech its common title:

A few important commissions came to him ; the French governor of Rome asked him to paint Virgil reading the Aeneid ( 1812 ) for his residence, and to paint two colossal works — Romulus's victory over Acron ( 1812 ) and The Dream of Ossian ( 1813 )— for Monte Cavallo, a former Papal residence undergoing renovation to become Napoleon's Roman palace.

It is the nearest town to the birthplace of the Roman writer Virgil.

Theocritus, who lived from about 310 to 250 BC, was the creator of pastoral poetry, a type that the Roman Virgil mastered in his Eclogues.
