is a district of Minato, Tokyo, Japan, famous as home to the rich Roppongi Hills area and an active night club scene.

Roppongi was not extensively populated until after the Meiji Restoration, although the area was trafficked for centuries and served as the site of the cremation of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada's wife in 1626.

Contributing to the international scene was the location of several foreign embassies and foreign corporate offices in the Roppongi area.

In the past, Roppongi had a reputation as an area with high Yakuza presence, whether as customers at Roppongi establishments, conducting business, or managing or owning clubs and bars in the area.

Yongsan International Business District, a project propelled by Seoul Metropolitan Government to enhance its international competitiveness, is one of the world ’ s largest composite complexes whose total floor area is 5. 6 times that of Roppongi Hills in Japan and more than two times that of Canary Wharf in the United Kingdom.

The project site takes up 78, 000 square meters ( 19. 4 acres ) previously occupied by the Japan Defense Agency in Roppongi area of Minato, along Gaien Higashi and close to Roppongi Crossing, and less than a kilometer ( half a mile ) from the similarly scaled Roppongi Hills complex.

However, its ridership has increased by about five percent each year since its opening, following new commercial and residential development around major stations such as Roppongi and Shiodome.

Murakami has also collaborated with a wide range of creators and industries in Japan, a prominent example being the image characters he created for the press relations campaign of the major urban real estate development Roppongi Hills.

Completed in 2003 and named for builder Minoru Mori, the tower is the centerpiece of the Roppongi Hills urban development.

The Tokyo Midtown, which is Tokyo's latest mixed-use development project, is built less than a kilometer from the borders of Roppongi Hills.
