In the graveyard lies the base and lower shaft of a plain Saxon cross.

Rothley has been inhabited since Saxon times, evidenced by the ancient Saxon cross in the church graveyard in the village.

In order to defend against Saxon raiders, the Romans created a military district called the Litus Saxonicum (" Saxon Coast ") on both sides of the English Channel.
