Sea holly, otherwise rare in the Western Isles, has grown on Mingulay since at least the late nineteenth century, and sea milkwort, normally only found at sea level is able to grow on the high cliff tops due to the ocean spray and seagull manure.

Eryngium alpinum ( Alpine Sea Holly or Queen of the Alps ) is a herbaceous perennial plant of Eryngium genus, belonging to the Apiaceae family.

Smith records Sea Mouse-Ear ( Cerastium diffusum ), Narrow-leaved Mouse-ear ( Cerastium triviale ), Sea-Pearlwort ( Sagina maritimum ), Corn Spurrey ( Spergula arvensis ), Greater Sea-Spurrey ( Spergularia media ), Dovesfoot Cranesbill ( Geranium molle ), Common Stork's-bill ( Erodium cicutarium ), Common Vetch ( Vicia sativa ), Bramble ( Rubus fruticosus ), Common Silverweed ( Argentina anserina ), Marsh Cinquefoil ( Potentilla palustris ), and English Stonecrop ( Sedum anglicum ) for Lady Isle in the 1890s.

The cliff faces support a maritime rock-crevice community with Thrift Armeria maritima, Rock Samphire Crithmum maritimum, Sea Aster Aster tripolium and Sea Spleenwort Asplenium marinum as common components.

Herb species present include Sea Stork's-bill Erodium maritimum, Buck's-horn Plantain Plantago coronopus, Rough Clover Trifolium scabrum, all of which are indicative of a maritime influence, plus Wild Clary Salvia verbenaca, Smooth Hawk's-beard Crepis capillaris and Pink-sorrel Oxalis articulata.

Many animal species live in the mountains surrounding the Dead Sea.

The Red Sea is generally saltier and more nutrient-poor than the Atlantic, so the Red Sea species have advantages over Atlantic species in the salty and nutrient-poor eastern Mediterranean.

Accordingly, most Red Sea species invade the Mediterranean biota, and only few do the opposite.

Invasive species originated from the Red Sea and introduced into the Mediterranean by the construction of the canal have become a major component of the Mediterranean ecosystem, and have serious impacts on the Mediterranean ecology, endangering many local and endemic Mediterranean species.

Currently about 300 species from the Red Sea have been identified in the Mediterranean Sea, and there are probably others yet unidentified.

The Egyptian government's intent to enlarge the canal has raised concerns from marine biologists, fearing that this will worsen the invasion of Red Sea species in the Mediterranean.

This species is subdivided into three subspecies: the Atlantic walrus ( O. r. rosmarus ) which lives in the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific walrus ( O. r. divergens ) which lives in the Pacific Ocean, and O. r. laptevi, which lives in the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean.

This species grows in the Mediterranean Sea region, with Portugal, Spain, Algeria and Morocco producing most of the world's supply.

Three species of Loricifera have been found in the sediments at the bottom of the L ' Atalante basin in Mediterranean Sea, more than 3, 000 meters down, the first multicellular organisms known to spend their entire lives in an oxygen-free environment.

The Australian coast is visited by six species of sea turtle: the Flatback, Green Sea, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead and the Leatherback Sea Turtles ; all are protected in Australian waters.

This investment has included the construction of an oil terminal in the Barents Sea at a cost of approximately € 700 million by an independent company especially created to oversea the construction and administration of the terminal, a pipeline to connect the terminal to the ZPS Southern Khylchuyu oilfields at a cost of around € 250 million, the completion of the Kharyaga-Indiga pipeline and a gas plant near Khumzha.

During its operations, the Sillamäe plant dumped the processing wastes into a tailing pond at the north-western part of Sillamäe near the Baltic Sea shoreline.

Another possible candidate for oldest organism on earth is a stand of the marine plant Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea, which could be up to 100, 000 years of age.

In J. W. Buel's Land and Sea ( 1887 ), the Ya-te-veo (" I-see-you ") plant is said to catch and consume large insects, but also attempts to consume humans.
