J. Lyons and Co., one of the UK's leading catering and food manufacturing companies in the first half of the 20th century, sent two of its senior managers, Oliver Standingford and Raymond Thompson, to the USA in 1947 to look at new business methods developed during the Second World War.

* 1274 – In France, the Second Council of Lyons opens to regulate the election of the Pope.

The Second Council of Lyons was convened on 7 May 1274, to regulate the election of the pope.

He thus broke the tenuous union which had been reached between the Greek and the Latin Churches at the Second Council of Lyons in 1274 and further compromise was rendered impossible.

The conclave began on 23 December 1294, ten days after Celestine's resignation, in strict accordance with the rules established by Pope Gregory X at the Second Council of Lyons of 1274.

On his arrival at Rome, his first act was to summon the council which met at the Second Council of Lyons in 1274 for the purpose of considering the East-West Schism, the condition of the Holy Land, and the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church.

He was proceeding to send legates to Michael VIII Palaeologus, the Byzantine emperor, in connection with the recent decisions of the Second Council of Lyons, when he died at Rome.

According to author Anne Henderson of the Sydney Institute, Lyons held a steadfast belief in " the need to balance budgets, lower costs to business and restore confidence " and the Lyons period gave Australia " stability and eventual growth " between the drama of the Depression and the outbreak of the Second World War.

On 7 April 1939, with the storm clouds of the Second World War gathering in Europe and the Pacific, Joseph Lyons became the first Prime Minister of Australia to die in office.

Leadership of the Catholic Church attempted to address the East-West Schism of the church through the Second Council of Lyons, but despite apparent success the effort was ultimately doomed to fail.

* Second Lyons Ministry

A tenuous union between the Greek and Latin church was signed at the Second Council of Lyons in 1274.

Pope Clement IV, another Frenchman, called him to the pontifical court as a chaplain and auditor of the palace, and in 1274 he accompanied Clement's successor, Pope Gregory X, to the Second Council of Lyons, the constitutions of which he helped draw up.

The four great orders were mentioned by the Second Council of Lyons ( 1274 ), and are:

Another point of theological contention between the western and eastern churches, is the doctrine of purgatory ( as it was shown at the Second Council of Lyons and the Council of Ferrara-Florence ).

A history of political interference in papal selection and consequently long vacancies between popes, culminating in the interregnum of 1268 – 1271, prompted Pope Gregory X to decree during the Second Council of Lyons in 1274 that the cardinal electors should be locked in seclusion cum clave ( Latin for " with a key ") and not permitted to leave until a new Bishop of Rome had been elected.

In 1274, he attended the Second Council of Lyons, and about 14 June 1275 he was appointed Bishop of Hereford and was consecrated on 8 September 1275.

The Second Council of Lyons in 1274 put into execution the ordinance of the Fourth Lateran Council, forbidding the foundation of new religious orders, and absolutely suppressed all mendicant institutions not yet approved by the Holy See.

The Second Council of Lyons ( 1274 ) recognized these as the five " great " mendicant orders, and suppressed certain others.

During the Second World War, the colleges of the university ( with the exception of Birkbeck ) and their students left London for safer parts of the UK, while Senate House was used by the Ministry of Information, with its roof becoming an observation point for the Royal Observer Corps.

In the Second World War Macmillan at last attained office, serving in the wartime coalition government as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply from 1940 to 1942.
